hi all. I’ve just got my iPhone 14 pro Mac and transfer as usual from my old iPhone, and somehow I have over 668GB of system data?! Any idea how I clear this without having to reset the whole iPhone and starting from scratch? Thanks in advance

Sorry I can't help. Is your phone 1TB?

I once had a iPad that had storage creep like this.

I restored from backup. Cleared the extra storage at first. Then it came back within minutes.

I set up as new. Same thing.

Good luck. I would love to know how this gets solved, if it does.

Hi there. Yes I have the 1TB phone but have no idea how this happened / not how to clear it! I really don’t want to have to wipe and start again but can’t find anything helpful online about how to solve this

I’m seeing something similar, 256GB model.

I did a phone-to-phone transfer to set up the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Whenever I reboot the new phone, the system data is down to about 1GB. Then over the next few hours it creeps up until it fills my storage. A reboot erases it again.

Likely some runaway log file. I’m HOPING it’s related to setting up the new phone, and that it’ll stop doing it in a few days. I also want to avoid restoring from a backup or even worse, restarting from new.

I’d recommend rebooting every now and then, and keeping an eye on it, and hopefully it fixes itself. Or maybe 16.1 will fix it. I saw a similar issue a few years back, and it went away after a few days.

Same is happening with my iPhone 14 Pro Max. Woke up this morning with alert saying storage is nearly full and system data has used up 1TB! Soft reboot and it's removed the system data but after a few hours it's creeping up again (to 400GB).

Left it overnight and seemed to have sorted itself out this morning, but it’s got worse again during the day. No idea what it’s doing or what’s causing it, but it’s a mess

Mine has been ok for about three hours now, but I’m keeping an eye on it.

Before that though, I called AppleCare, which ended up being unhelpful, but at least it puts it on their radar that this is happening. The rep I spoke to said there weren’t other instances of it yet in his system, but that might change over the next few days if lots of people start calling in.

He did run a remote diagnosis, which of course showed nothing useful. He also initiated an “Enhanced Logging Session”, which my phone says will complete at 10am tomorrow.

I told him I’m not willing to wipe my phone right now, and that I’ll call back in a few days if the issue persists.

I have the same problem rendering my phone literally useless, Initially I thought it was a problem at my end so i even upgraded the phone by [purchasing the 256gb version. To then be told its a soft ware issue and i have to wait up to 72 hours for it to sort its self out and this time must be done connected to WIFI and on charge!!
Its absolutely ridiculous if I'm honest and will be heading to the genius bar on Tuesday to have it sorted out. I actually don't believe that Apple know what's going on

Hiya
I called at 1630 BST and the rep I spoke to said there were other issues that he saw on his system but he wasn't much use to me if I'm honest my phone is currently unusable as its completely full! its an absolute joke from Apple

The same problem killed an old iPad for me. iOS just auto stuffing the iPad no matter what I did or deleted. I ended up wiping it and trading it in and getting a new upgraded one. Not the only reason I bought the new one but it was one reason.

600GB is insanely high. This is the # 1 reason I never do an iCloud backup on a new phone. Always set-up as new and then log in to iCloud after.

I've been having this issue for years since the iPhone 11 Pro as far as system data. Since there's no way to clear it, it keeps creeping higher over time. I really hope Apple find a fix.

I’ve been watching it over the last 3 hours and it’s crept up by over 50GB again (and still rising). Everything on the phone seems to have downloaded now from the back up (photos, media etc), so I have no idea what it’s still doing. Will leave it overnight and see if it improves, but really unimpressed that Apple still haven’t addressed this bug. Seems to have been going on for years

I did a iPhone to iPhone setup and not with iCloud backup...

This was what I was worried about. I currently have the system storage bug on my 13 PM and have a 14 PM on pre order. If the bug is just going to follow over through the iPhone to iPhone setup…

But I didn’t have this issue with my last iPhone (13 pro max).

The other thing I’ve noticed is the battery is going down much faster than the 13 pro max. Not sure if it’s related to this.

Same here. Battery life is awful compared to my 13 PM. I know the first day or so can mess up battery life thought so I’ll see how it goes over the next 48 hours

It’s been over 20 hours now without an issue for
Mine kept creeping up all night. Restarted the phone this morning, seemed ok whilst left on charge for a couple of hours so took off charge - and now it’s increasing again minute by minute. This is infuriating!

I thought it was connected to shared photo albums so reset them all last night, but now that’s back to normal again the issue is still there.

Have you tried calling Apple? Not that they’ll know the fix, but they’ll likely run the same 24-hour diagnostic they’ve got going on mine, and hopefully something clues them in to the problem.

The main issue is there are thousands of reasons this could happen. All system services write logs, and all those logs are added up together. If one service is running out of control, it’ll cause this. Apple needs to be able to see the detailed logs to see what the source of the problematic logs is.

Not yet. Will wait until tomorrow and then give them a call.

I don't have any 14 series phone, I have an iphone 13 pro, but the problems with System Data is something recurrent in iOS. iOS is very poorly optimized in this aspect, and I think it's time for Apple to fix this mess that it has there, because out of nowhere on many occasions it begins to take up space, and not even Apple knows what is happening. your only solution is to restore, which is a short-lived solution. with what your devices already cost, this is no longer admissible.

I called Apple Support yesterday. I was advised to try restoring from iCloud save (I did a iPhone to iPhone transfer initially). It seemed to be ok overnight with system data at around 20GB but by lunchtime it's crept up to 250GB. It's certainly not going up as quickly as before, and I think the battery drain is better too.

Same problem here. 1TB 14pro. About 250GB actually being used, but twice now I’ve had ‘iPhone full’ messages and it shows 750GB of system storage. Powering off and back on cleared it. A ‘volume up, down, power’ also cleared it (although with the latter the iphone initially showed as full still, and then over around 40 seconds the ’system storage‘ started going down).

I have ‘storage’ open now and it is very slowly going up by about 10GB every 30 minutes or so, so if it keeps this up even with 750GB free space will eventually be full again.

I’ve logged with Apple via applefeedback://

Mine is now creeping up to about 100GB+ used by about 11pm. I then go to sleep, wake up and it's back down to ~11Gb in use. Then climbs by about 10Gb per hour during the day. It's done this for 3 days now. Going to log with Apple today as no way it should be doing this still - I started the restore from the old iPhone on Friday about 2pm, so it's been nearly 5 days now
