Yay! This is actually a decent functionality improvement that people have actually been asking for!

Now do the other 20 or so big issues!

If this is true, this is gonna be very great, Ashame for the developer who wanted to do this, but would rather it done through Apple anyways. I imagine this would be a wifi only thing, but who would want to download huge podcasts over EDGE or 3G. Next up, Movie downloads? TV shows? I can't believe this is a higher priority than C+P.

PLEASE ALLOW 3G downloads!!!!!

podcast sequence

I'm more thrilled to see that the podcasts now appear to be sorted by date with the oldest at the top so that I can actually listen in order from oldest to newest, finally!

OH Yeah!

Oh, Yeah! Maybe there's a podcast I can download that will copy and paste!! Way to go to meet people's needs Apple!

F*i*n*a*l*l*y*!

The lack of this feature is why I returned my original iPhone. I gave in & grudgingly bought the 3G, but the need for this is sososo obvious -- almost as obvious as being able to sort or search email. Or to cut & paste. Uh, oh yeah, right.

i think if anything, it would be some ATT deal that is stopping it, not the labels... they dont care how much cell tower bandwidth gets used.

It's my understanding that the labels license songs for cell phones differently than they do for iTunes. And Apple isn't willing to pay the higher rates, but feels that by only allowing wifi it's an iPod not a cell phone download. Unfortunately, I can't quote any sources, but that's what I remember reading.

I'm wondering if this will be limited to audio podcasts. Some of the videos can get upwards of 500mb. I see no reason why one couldn't download over a GSM network since podcasts are free; the only limit on music purchases is the contracts on how the media is obtained. I've been waiting for this feature for quite a while and I look forward to not having to sync my phone so often.

I hope that it I'll be able to download via wifi no matter what. Besides, just think of the battery consumption doing 500mb over a GSM would be?

Typically, how long does it take for a Dev Seed like this to an official release?

nice idea apple but get the basics done first

Great idea apple but come on get the basics in place first mms people have been screaming for this for a long time now and it should have been there from day one. I also think the camera app can be improved massively there is a app called snapture for all who jailbrake cheack it out it just shows how good it could be. Apple please just give us the basic things we all want.

I can't believe this is a higher priority than C+P.

Is it? It might be that people who develop this are totally different from the people who deelop C+P. Apple CAN work on several features at once.

But honestly, I don't really see the fuzz about C+P. I could count the times I would have needed it with one hand. What I WOULD need all the time is the ability to open links in new tabs in the background. And unlike C+P, that would be dead-simple to implement UI-wise!

2nd, I'm sure they are going to make you have to be on WiFi to download podcasts.

The WiFi limitation is due to the licensing deal Apple has with record labels. Labels want more money for OTA downloads, and Apple categorically doesn't want to give it. Not hogging the network is just a bonus. Networks are rarely down due to capacity issues. Usually poor signals are the result of damaged antennas (they're checked biweekly unless there are many reports of poor signal in the same area), or just plain old interference (EM signals are prone to all kinds of obstructions).

I'd imagine that audio podcasts under 10Mb would be allowed, video and HD podcasts wouldn't be. Maybe Apple will include a podcast section in the iTunes store, maybe they'll let a 3rd party application do it.

Finally!! This will be sooo cool... :D

To be able to sort podcasts out by categories would also be nice...

Excellent. This ties right back to what I've been saying since day one ... they need to update the software to make use of virtual RAM since the iPhone inherently does not have enough RAM. The reason that when you have more than one web page open and you click on one of the others, it has to reload is because there isn't enough RAM to store both webpages. Same thing when you click the "back" button. It has to reload because it is no longer in the RAM. Why does Safari auto-close ("crash") on long webpages? Because there isn't enough RAM. So ... since we can't do a hardware upgrade on the phones we already have (actually, we could, and that would be pretty darn sweet), what we can do with software is make use of virtual RAM (which would use your flash memory to store excess RAM data for the CPU).

I thought paging was generally discouraged in Flash devices due to limited writes? Or has the tech come on enough to get away with it now?
