I'll try it out, but I recently switched to Pocket Casts, best desktop app and mobile app integration imo - Apple watch functionality etc. I was a LOOOONG time Overcast user of 5+ years.
I love Pocket Casts. It does exactly what I want and works in just the way I'd expect.

It's also been flawless running from my Apple Watch cellular. I go running 2-3 times a week and have never had an issue.

Brilliant app!

I use Pocket Casts because of Android and iOS crossplatform, in addition to that... I like the UI.

And, couple years back when they switched to subscription model... they took care of the people who already paid for the app. They gave me lifetime membership, so... I doubt I'll be switching to any podcast apps.
Same here. Pocket Casts does everything I want - cross platform - and I also bought in before the "Adobe Subscription Model" cancer metastasized. No reason to switch...

Love me some Overcast, so I can’t wait to check out the improvements. I hope some CarPlay enhancements are in there too.
Overcast’s CarPlay implementation has been a bit unreliable lately. I think he may have been slowly pushing pieces of his update out on that side first. Hope it is more reliable now.

This is a great update. I tried a lot of players but I always come back to Overcast. The value out of it is just insane, and the privacy information for each podcast is something that is still unmatched to this day. A must have for Apple users for sure.

I loved Overcast but I could never get it to sync to my Apple Watch correctly. That was a deal breaker since I listen to Podcasts while I run. I really miss it because besides that it was a wonderful Podcast app. Has the sync gotten better or was I the only one that couldn't get it to work?
Once in a while I have to manually press the "sync" arrow, but on the whole I've never had any significant issues with the syncing.

I already had paid for it and they still pump me for a subscription?

I think it was a case by case scenerio. Because I had previously paid for the Android version, iOS version and web access. During that whole transition to subscription model ordeal... people were upset.

So, later on.. they decided to give certain users lifetime membership, how did they decide that? I have no clue.

For this reason I moved to Pocket Casts a year or so ago.

I dropped Overcast because it would regularly stop playing about 5 seconds after I switched the audio output to Homepod.
That might have been back when overcast had to use Airplay 1.0, I think it is using 2.0 now and that is more reliable.

Would it be so hard for Apple to fix its Podcast app?
Yes. Yes it would.

Otherwise they would have done it by now.

There is a small part of me that thinks this is deliberate - Apple makes a concerted effort to punt a few core/semi-core apps to ensure that there's a healthy market for some third party apps to give them some legal pushback against claims of monopoly and market domination.

Last year I had switched from Overcast to Castro b/c Castro's queue system matched my needs better. Like you I use my Apple Watch w/o iPhone on my runs, and Castro's watch sync was garbage - so I switched back to Overcast and it has been very good. I think Marco completely rewrote the watch app and sync engine in the last year or 2.

Now that this update adds a queue, I doubt I'll return to Castro and their $20/year subscription

Overcast is not on Android. I switched to Android from Apple mainly because when I had Apple, Car Play didn't work. I also do like the Samsung phone. If I was on Apple, I would still use Overcast, and be excited by this massive update.
Umm, CarPlay only works on Apple!

the fact that it took years to get some of the features should be embarrassing to Marco. I’ve used this app for a while, there are usually glitches with the servers or other fairly minor things. Overall I won’t complain about it, but to act like this is a great long awaited update is laughable.

Overcast is one of my most forgettable apps, and that’s a great thing.

I listen to podcasts every day. I just open up the app and they’re there. In the right order. New episodes are shown, old episodes aren’t. I don’t have to do any thinking whatsoever. It just works. And that’s why the app itself is so forgettable.

There’s no tweaking of settings, hunting for the podcast I want to listen to, trying to find the next episode or trying to remember where I left off.

The free version may call itself ad-supported but with one tiny little banner at the bottom of the screen it’s almost invisible. Definitely the best £9.99 I’ve never spent.

I used Apple's player for many years, then moved to Pocket Casts. Then, when that app got sold and it started to suck, I moved to RSS Radio - which is where I am today.

I can't say I see the value in a pay-every-year podcasting app, but obviously some others do.

I will be interested in this app if and only if they make podcastindex.org an option. They can make the app as pretty as they want, allowing the choice of the index is all that I care about. For now, I am quite happy with Podcast Guru on iOS, it has only been on the platform since November and is already great.
