Yeah, I realized that when I started using PCI Extreme. Even with the Rev. B Rage 128 Pro it wasn't even close to being as snappy with QE enabled.

So am I right in assuming that most people have had success and continued stability with about a 50mhz overclock? I have 2 300Mhz B&W's, the one is currently unused, and the other is an Internet gateway/proxy and soon to be ad blocker. I don’t really need more performance... but I just cant resist… :D

Well, I have a Beige that's OC'd to 366Mhz from 300, and it's been folding for about a week now with no problems. I had it up to 385Mhz, but that crashed a bunch, so it's clocked down to 366 again.

Edit: I did also add a fan to it, though, just 'cause the heatsink was getting awfully hot!

its proven that QE slows down video proformance on the pci only machines, but helps the GUI render more smoothly in some cases, the Beige G3 is worse that the B&W in that area cause it only has the 33mhz pci bus compaired to the 66mhz pci bus on that one port

For how inexpensive G4 ZIFs are currently, why not look into one of those? That way you get AltiVec on your system, which will give you more noticeable performance gains as compared to going up only 50 or so MHZ without the engine.

I use my G3 B&W ( with a 450mhz G4 processor overclocked to 500mhz) for many tasks, and it still is a reasonably quick computer even when compared to my Dual 533 G4, 1.2Ghz G4 iBook, and Powermac G5 Dual 2.0.

It can't do complex tasks lightning fast, but it does fine with being a network server, entertainment computer (watch ripped videos and internet content).

I have though about it, but the only upgrade manufacturer that does G4 upgrades for a B&W is sonnet, there is only one local distributer for Sonnet, so considering the monopoly they have Im expecting a bit of a price shock! would rather upgrade the memory and HDD first before I go for a expensive processor, or even better.. would try to get that gigabit ethernet card working! LOL

I thought with Apple switching to intel that the price of G4 upgrades would go down due Apple eventually lowering prices on new machines but nope.

Would have though so as well, but truth be told is not only is it getting harder to find equipment for older macs, but its getting more expensive.

Sad though, the vintage machines still have so much life in them.

just contacted the local supplier of sonnets hardware, and the 500Mhz G4 version isnt available locally (no reason why) and the 1GHz version is, but translated will cost me $500, considering I got the machine for $50 I cant really validate that kind of expenditure.

YMMV, but be really careful with this. I OC'd my 400 to 450 way back in the day and had data corruption as a result. Some OC better than others, of course. Also, don't expect to OC your PCI to PCI-X (and especially not PCI-E) speeds. Sorry.

you must have had a rev. 1 B&W

I have a B&W G3 as a second mac. its a G3 350 oc'ed to 400. has been running 24/7 for 3-4 months since the overclock and not 1 single issue.

i just tryed enabling QE on my Beige G3 and i have to say i should have done it sooner. the GUI is so smooth its unbeleavable. dvd movies play smoother. videos in VLC play smoother. no sound skipping when movies are being played. all in all i havent seen a single ill effect yet with anything only good improvements.

i have had 15 windows open with safari open and activly surfing wile paying a video in VLC and the OS is still useable. a bit slower but useable and the movie is still playing good and sound isnt studdering. seems like my system is more accepting than some of the others that i have read revews on. i dont know what makes my system so diffrent than those others but i will accept it .

ok i have a question for all you B&W people out there what do i need to do to put a G4 ZIF into my B&W 300 MHz (to slow been thinking about OC but i thought but a G4 and OC it) i saw a G4 1 GHz at OWC that i might buy once i get the money but i may go ahead and OC it to like 350 atleast and or i hope 400 Mhz.... or whould i be better off buying a G3 500 MHz and OCing it

Two choices...

Truly.

1) buy a G4 500 (from Ebay, usually about $80)
2) buy a INTEL Mac Mini <- vote for this one. G4's are history.

Buying a $300 CPU for that machine is pointless.

I know, I have a B&W G4 - 500... its bus is too slow, and gets worse with the Sonnet 1GHz (de-clocks B&W bus to 66MHz) ... NO AGP, Smallish PSU, archaic (now nearly 10 years old) architecture.

buying a G4 mini IMHO is a waste of money and time, for one it has a real limited upgrade path, and two if something goes wrong with it it is basically a over priced paper weight.

you can find a Digital Audio G4 which has the same system bus at 133mhz. with a Digital Audio you can replace the video card, CPU, HDD, Burner, and have 4 PCI slots to burn and have a 4x AGP slot, max ram of 1.5gb of ram. my Friend bought one from ebay for $130 shipped which was a G4 466mhz version. you can run OS 9.x and tiger. with the mini you will be limited to OS X and running OS 9.x in classic mode

i would pay a bit more to be able to have more of a upgrade path than to pay less and not able to expand much.

or you can just buy a G3 1.1ghz cpu for the B&W, and its a bit less than that G4 cpu and it wont underclock the system bus to 66mhz.

buying a intel mini would be more worth it but you will still be limited by the same as the G4 mini. and you will be paying more for it, and the integrated intel GPU blows

Where? OWC stopped selling, probably due to poor performance, and cost.

I meant an Intel Mac Mini, and changed my post. The Core Intel's smoke, despite having a crappy integrated graphics.

you can still find those G3 upgrades around, i seen a few on ebay for $150 and some was lower. or you can find people on forums that are willing to sell one.

yea the intel core's do smoke everything, dont they have a solo and dual core version's. you still have a limited upgrade path, and if something in them not replaceable goes bad you will have a paper weight (if you dont have apple care)

B&w...

If you decide to upgrade your B&W... give me a chance to sell off some gear. If there is enough interest in the parts, I will buy a new machine :).

1) Sonnet G4-500
2) Sonnet ATA 100 controller card
3) ATI 9200 w/receipt (think there is still a transferable 3 year warranty...)
4) 4x 256 Micron 2-2-2 PC100 Dimm's (purchased specifically for B&W's).

Traveling this week, but will be checking emails / PM's in the evenings.

I'm back and I have a new Power Mac G3 400 MHz. I just can find any jumpers for it here. What do you guys use?

This looks good too.

that is where i bought my G3 450mhz cpu from i got in my AIO ( its clocked at 466mhz cause of the 66mhz system bus). runs great as well

i dont know bout having pic's of the underside of the CPU like that. i would want to see the top of the CPU to see the numbers rather than the bottom.
