Guys, I'm NOT going to overclock the DUAL G4 anymore, because I don't feel like buying and waiting for a G4 to ship. Instead, I will buy a G5 Quad Core 2.7GHz next year, NOT a Mac Pro, because the Mac Pro doesn't properly fit my needs like a G5. Plus, the G5 is FASTER in tasks I do.

There was no Quad 2.7 G5, there was a Quad 2.5 G5 and a Dual 2.7. The Dual 2.7 should be avoided like the plague (I don't even want to link to the threads involving coolant leaks).

The most reliable G5 is the Dual Core 2.3 G5, no liquid cooling and a pretty fast G5.

What do you need the G5 for? I'm all for PowerPC but I would still recommend a Mac Pro because it has almost twice the expandability. What apps are we talkin?

/\ what i thought...

I'm wanting a Mac Pro too. Better architecture, better performance, dual bootable, etc, etc. I'm waiting patiently to get one in the near future.

Your fine with the current Quad G5 until the new Mac Pro comes out, you'll get twice the amount of cores.

An upgrade right now would not only be a waste of $ but barely a performance bump.

I see you aren't going to attempt the overclock anymore (smart move), but I have to say it in case others get the mistaken impression that this OC is possible:

Give me your opinion:

Do you think it'll be worth $35.00 to buy a DUAL G4 CPU W/Heatsink, and overclock it to Dual 800MHz? Don't worry, I'm skillful at micro-soldering, and don't post crap like "It won't work", and crap like that, OK?

It won't work. You could be the most skillful person with "micro-soldering" on the planet and it wouldn't work. Even with LN2 I doubt it would be able to achieve that clock. They call them the laws of physics for a reason...

You're far better off with a G5 anyway, despite the extra cost.

And underclocking won't strain the cpu, while overclocking will.:apple:

You may be able to over clock the 450 to 550, but not any higher. They won't run at that speed. MHZ isn't a myth - it's the timing on the clock chip.

As long as the CPU was a binned unit, you should be able to overclock it as high as you want (before the speed wall) as long as you have sufficient cooling, and voltage.

That is currently how Intel is able to beat AMD on the numbers game. Most of the CPU's they make can run 1+Ghz higher than sold for (on air in a lot of cases).

Some chips are what is affectionatly called golden samples. Batches that were really supposed to be higher clocked parts but were speed binned due to the need for slower parts. I don't know how often IBM/Motorola did that, but it is a common thing with Intel and AMD.

I'm not convinced the G4's motherboard could handle the extra juice, for one thing.

Also, if you read up on the period that these machines were being made, Motorola had trouble getting the PPCs to the speeds they'd promised - they had trouble getting the G4 to run reliably at 500MHz. In other words, these chips probably don't overclock well, since they are already running near their maximum reliable clock.

I'm using an after market CPU upgrade in my G4 - it's a 7455 rated at 1.33GHz and running at 1.4GHz. Turn the speed up much higher and it gets flaky - typical with the G4, which has never been much of an overclocker.

you're right. Infact, my machine is already a waste of money as I've gone away from my original intent of career path (media/film/video). I majored in film/video when I graduated from college but now I'm a fashion designer...ha ha...

I really only want those things for the pure technological aspect of things...

I know, what I meant to say was Quad 2.5!
And I said the Mac Pro Doesn't fit my needs like a G5 would. Plus, the G5 Quad is FASTER in many tasks, and I don't need to worry too much about expandability in another 3-5 Years. Think about it: Why am I still using a G4 thats 8 years old?

Yeah, I researched and you're right. It's physically possible, but not virtually. I figured that anyways.

Just so you know, this doesn't actually change the bus or processor rate, it just changes how the system reads it. The system will still operate at the same speed it did before this hack.

Also, 33 is 33% of 100, and 33 is 6.6% of 500. ;)

lol yeah i just got another sawtooth but is only a 450mhz and decided to see just how slow it is compared to my 500dp. i put it in and started it up. took a while lol but it finally did it. now my system profiler still says it's 533mhz but with one processor lol.

and mr sawtooth guy, were you trying to buy a 450 processor but couldn't get it? i'd sell you mine if you want it?

i want to mess around and overclock my 450 so where can i find the resister jumpers? and what is their rating?
