This happened to my mid2012 15" MBP9,1 (Mojave) recently:
- constant overheating of Northbridge-part of the body (F1-F5 keyboard region); no real sleep-mode /w overheating in clamshell-mode while supposed to be in sleep-mode
- fans running berserk,
- "Battery needs replacement" warning and fast discharge of battery;
- funny behavior concerning removal of Taskbar-related Apps, which miraculously reappear after reboot; performance felt kind of laggy
- problems not resolved by SMC/PRAM reset
AFAIK the system was up about a decade and since has been migrated/updated to Mojave continuously starting with Lion. SSD was swapped into various devices (including a not-supported early2008 15" MBP that was running dd1/mojave smoothly and without problems.)
So I added an additional Volume to the SSD/APFS-Container and installed Mojave from the scratch.
I was stunned by the result:
- Battery-state "good"
- temperature, fan-activity, performance normalized
Since I have two Mojave-SystemVolumes now I can alternatively boot into either of the Mojave-SystemVolumes.
Booting into the old Mojave-SystemVolume, the problems and battery-warning are still present, even after adding a new user-account.
Returning to the new Mojave-SystemVolume, everything is fine again.
Considering that I almost replaced the battery or ran into other trouble I'd like to share this experience ...
