I'm launching Portal through Steam. I was told to enable "access for assistive devices" in universal access and I did. The in-game overlay is enabled in Steam preferences and set to SHIFT+TAB. When I press SHIFT+TAB I get a partial white box flickering in the upper-left corner, but nothing else. When I click on Achievements in the Portal menu (on the title screen of the actual game) I get the message "You must be logged into steam to unlock or view achievements." I am logged into Steam. While this is happening I can navigate through the steam client, view my games, etc. Steam lists me as currently playing Portal. Achievements in Portal aren't unlocking for me or showing in my Steam account.

Is this happening to anyone else? Any ideas?

EDIT: I restarted and now clicking Achievements in-game shows me a list of achievements, but doesn't show any unlocked even though I know I have completed them. The overlay keys now pause the game, but the overlay doesn't appear (other than the partial white box in the upper-left corner.) Grrr.

It seems that achievements are working now, but my overlay doesn't work in any of my games (Torchlight or Portal). I'm using a dual monitor setup if that makes a difference.

Is anyone else having problems with the overlay?

Is anyone successfully using the Steam overlay on a multi-monitor setup?

    Had the same problem

Yeah, i had the same problem (just without the dual monitor thing). What i did to fix it was i went to System Preferences and clicked Universal Access. When you're in the Universal Access menu, on the very bottom, there will be two check boxes: Enable access for assistive devices, and Show Universal Access status in the menu bar. If you don't have "Enable access for assistive devices" checked, then all you have to do is click it, and you should be good. All of this is assuming you have a Mac of course. :apple:

Yes, I'm on a mac and I do have "Enable access for assistive devices" checked. Still no overlay.

If you had actually read the original post at all, you would see Ack state that he already enabled access for assistive devices =P

Achievements are working fine for me, the overlay is still buggy. No doubt it will be patched soon enough.
