I'll be taking a trip in January to Tokyo and the Philippines. I have an unlocked iPhone 3G and can see some value in using the GPS function. I have a couple of questions:

    1) In the Philippines, I plan to get a local pre-paid SIM and use that for voice (in country) and data. I note that that the pre-paid accounts list a cost per minute or cost per block of minutes. (One works out to about $1 an hour for unlimited data.) Since at that point it would be a "home" sim, I do not think I can turn off data roaming and block the data connection, right? Is there a way (other than turing the phone off) to stop data unless needed? (Much like you can turn Wi-Fi off and on.)

    2) In Japan, I'll be there only a couple of days. Other than simply removing the SIM card, is there a way to turn the phone/EDGE/3G connection off (no roaming charges) ... but still be able to use wi-fi? I think Airplane Mode also shuts off wi-fi, right?

    Thanks in advance.

You can turn Wi-Fi back on after you activate the Airplane Mode.
