Anyone here overweight? I can’t seem to deal with heat. YES getting in a car is like being in front of furnace blowing at my face. It is terrible and scary. Yet other people seem to be okay. I will take very high humanity heat over this furnace like heat.

Anyone else here having this problem? Where getting in car even with window down is like being in front of a furnace blowing at my face. It is scary and terrible.

I am moderately overweight and yes I feel it.

Does your car have air conditioning? Perhaps go out to your car a few minutes early, lower the windows, so the heat gets out and then get the AC going. Do this before you get in. Don’t just get in the car because at first it’s 140° in there. That will even make a skinny person overheat.

If you have a newer car with remote start, you can start it and have the AC cool the car before you get in.

I don’t know about all electric vehicles, but with mine I can remotely activate my AC and even set a schedule where I go to work at home. When I get into my car in the evening after work it’s cool.

I realize not everyone has the budget for this so it depends on your budget.

There’s always losing weight and I definitely need to do that. I’ve been walking throughout the day just trying to stay active.

Lose weight Problem Solved - and you lose weight by not eating what you are currently eating - I used to be 55lb over - then I had a warning shot - Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Cholesterol and then a Stroke - i changed my diet - salads, vegetables, some fruit, some fish , no red meat, very little Chicken, and Pork once or twice a year - no sugar of any kind- I’m down to 184 lbs - my 10th grade weight - I walk 5 miles everyday - you got to commit - it easier if your life is threatened.

If you don't have the time/aren't interested in losing weight (like most would suggest) I would look into using your car's air conditioning system efficiently. Most of them have individual settings for head/body/legs. Logically I'm guessing the 'body' is the one generating heat, in that case try making sure the AC is covering that area. Tilt the vents if need be.

I'm overweight and don't experience many problems in terms of heat, but that might be since I usually wear short sleeve clothing. Also make sure you stay hydrated.

I was overweight for a couple of years, around a decade ago.

Lots of things were uncomfortable — that's kind of the point.

Running upstairs was uncomfortable.

Now — aged 39 — I have a VO2 max in the 'elite category'.

My knee (missing a ligament) feels stronger than ever.

I enjoy sports and feel very comfortable.

Nothing will fix that discomfort like losing the weight and adding muscle.

I’ve been over weight most of my life. At times I would have been classified as clinically obese.
About 10 years ago I decided to do something about it. No diet per se. Just cutting out things that didn’t agree with me. I also started exercising. I’m now fitter and the correct weight. Have been fit a long time now.
Car issues could be your AC needs a recharge.
But your best bet is try to lose some weight. Just make some small changes. Try an Apple Watch if it motivates you to close your rings.

Good luck with it.

Ive lost weight in the past 6 months. About 20 lbs. But heat in a car that'll be problem till the end of time. I don't see how losing weight would help that. Unless you’re working up a major sweat walking to the car? Ive been 5:2 intermittent fasting . And started meal replacements 3x a week for lunch with Huel Ready to drink. I only recently started huel. That dropped another couple lbs in the weeks of been doing that. Im male 5’4” and was close to 210lbs. Im down to 188 currently.

Yes, such "a warning shot" would make most turn around. In my case I was a little overweight and have been pre-diabetic (just a couple of points below Type 2 diabetes), but what shocked me was my doctor telling me that I showed the signs of being too close to having stage 1 of "fatty liver." I immediately stopped the consumption of carbs, all types of sugars, specially concentrated ones from corn, processed foods, fried foods, chocolate, soda, and on and on. Even supermarket packaged breads, and yes... all types of drinks containing alcohol. I have lost nearly 40 pounds, and now have to make efforts to not lose any more weight :)

Portion control with these: Lean chicken and turkey meats are OK, and so wild-caught Alaska or pacific salmon, and lean red meats are OK too as long as you practice portion control. Sardine and herring are also good sources of protein, but one must choose wild-caught and packed with no salt added, then drain well before consuming. Tuna is another good animal protein, but one has to be cautious about its mercury contents. Skipjack tuna contains the lowest level or heavy metals among all types of tuna. I lost most of my weight by not eating sweets such as chocolates, and the rest by meal portion control, but at my age I also have to pay attention to kidney and liver function, and to sarcopenia, which is something that happens as one ages.

I think everybody with weight problems (which are merely a symptom of metabolic disease) needs to do that. It's a necessary first step to reclaiming one's health.

I started a ketogenic diet (almost no carbs) at the beginning of 2024 weighing 115kg and lost over 25kg in six months. I then went on to a carnivore diet and haven't looked back. My weight has been stable at 75kg for half a year now (180cm tall).

I don't do portion control. I eat when I'm hungry (usually once or twice a day) and until I'm stuffed. I salt to taste. I don't eat any plant stuff. My staples are fatty red meat (beef and lamb) grass-fed from local farmers, fish (sardines, mackerel, salmon), bacon, some pork, and occasionally chicken. Also lots of eggs. Only animal fats – beef tallow, butter, ghee, lard.

A couple of times per year I do a 100-hour fast, to kick my body into recycling and clean-up mode.

Since eating that way most of my health issues have disappeared. In fact, the only one left is semi-baldness, but I don't think I can reverse that at my age (61) :D

I must agree with you since you are correct. The most important to do is to figure a way to help one's gut to become healthier along other internal organs (kidneys, liver, pancreas, and so on). It makes no difference if one can do it with animal protein or not, since all depends on your health status. For me I have to keep a tab on protein intake while being careful with the consumption of carbs that result in insulin resistance. My cholesterol levels are low, my liver fat has reversed, and so my blood pressure. These days my blood pressure (rested) is under 120/80, sometimes even 112/70 :) I have no idea if this has happened by losing weight alone, however.

I used to be.

Not extremely overweight but definitely too heavy. I had a lot of problems with muscle issues, fatigue, the lot. And heat really caused me issues.

With a combination of eating better and walking 6km a day and then also getting into riding bicycles the excess weight went away. Then when I started to become a stronger rider I lost more weight again. And all the issues I used to get, muscle cramps, back pain, shoulder pain, headaches etc seemed to go away. Blood pressure is also good now. Heart rate is low as well.

I never did any fasting or particularly special diets.

I got down to 57kg at one point - I had so much energy. By then I was also eating much more, but also riding a bike for 18-20 hours per week.

That was my way.

Consider the root cause of feeling the heat is fat. Fat is an insulator keeping your heat in your body. It adds weight which adds strain to everything you do and because of this puts added stress on your body's ability to cool itself. This all occurs outside of a hot car on your own, so when you get into one, you are adding even more external heat to your core, reducing air flow which further restricts evaporative cooling making you even hotter. I imagine this can induce some serious fight or flight response to get out that environment.

Everyone has already hit the head on the nail, with weight reduction. Some folks have glandular disorders like hashimotos disease or PCOS which makes losing significant weight almost impossible even with hormone correction so it is important not to default to "you're a fatty and need to stop eating donuts and get on a treadmill" LOL. The solution is not always that obvious or straightforward.

Anyways, I live in the desert and as such cannot stress enough the importance of a fully charged and up to snuff AC whether you're skinny or fat - doesnt matter. As already stated, if your AC has not been serviced, get it tuned up so it is blowing ice cold air and lots of it. Also, as already suggested, run your car with the AC going for a minute or two before you get in. This is AFTER you have opened your back door and then rapidly open and close your front door a few times, This will "flush" the hottest air out the back and make it easier for your AC to cool your cabin interior thus when you get into the car, it feels better.

If you have a big belly, when you sit down in the car seat, especially if its a small car, your belly pushes up into your diaphragm making taking full breaths of air harder or sometimes impossible which is also panic inducing. To help counter this, if you can, pull your car seat as far back as possible and tilt the back of your seat back enough to reduce that pressure on the diaphragm muscles. It will help you to be able to take bigger breaths which in a hot car is really important.

Now if your AC is broken and you cant afford to fix it (Ive been here a few times myself) this will sound silly, but drive faster with all the windows down. If you can, wet your Tshirt a bit before you get into the car or even better yet, get it wet and put it in the freezer for while. When you drive fast with the windows down, the blowing air across your wet shirt will improve evaporative cooling, whicking away heat from your body and if you can chill your shirt in the freezer, it cools your core outright helping delay over heating.

Another thing I have done is fill a hot water bottle with ice and water and stick that between my legs or across my gut or across the back of my neck LOL. I did this when my AC broke and it was 103F outside lol. Driving around was not pleasant and this really helped.

Along with this I highly recommend loose clothing. If you can, ignore ones modesty and embrace sleeveless tank tops, shorts, sandles, etc. I am lucky in that all my hair fell out, but consider shaving your head during the summer months or at least keep it SHORT.

In the weight loss category, I myself have been using Wegovy to help me lose/manage weight in my late 40s. It has really lessened my hunger and I have lost about 30 pounds with it and naturally eating less because Im not as hungry all the time and moderate but consistent physicial activity. What do I mean by that? I take my dog on walks, take my kids on bike rides, rake in dirt and over seed on my grass, putz around in my garden beds, go hike with the kids in the mountains, go birdwatching etc. Im not into "working out" or sweating much (Im not a sadist lol), so for me its more about doing the stuff I like to do that is already fun or enjoyable for me.

Anywyas, best of luck to you. I hope you feel better :)

Another tip for keeping your car cool is park in the shade if you can. Also those window reflectors you can buy are really handy. They make a big difference and stop you burning your hands on the steering wheel.
