I'm looking to upgrade the drive in my 08 unibody machine and strip out the now dead DVD drive. I've heard conflicting reports about whether a generic caddy to fit there will work or whether the OWC data doubler is much better. Has anyone any experiences of either?

Going generic, you run the risk of getting something ill fitting, I guess for the price do you want to roll the dice?

Personally, I'd go with the data doubler just to be safe but since I don't need one, I'm not sure of the price difference. My tune may change if its a huge price difference.

I have used generic ebay $10 caddies for my 13" 2008 and 2010 Unibody Macbook Pros and encountered no problems. A generic caddy will fit and work fine

Same here. Replaced my optical drive with a caddy and SSD. Works just fine.
