Hi there!

Long time reader, first time poster!

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me out with a question.

My early 2013 MBP w/ Retina recently met an unceremonious end courtesy of some water damage. The cost to repair was far too much to be worthwhile so I purchased a replacement instead.

However, it turned out that the SSD (768gb!) appears OK. The guy at the Genius Bar suggested I look for a third party external casing that I could use to (a) access the data (since he said Apple charges $90CAD or something to transfer it over) and (b) use the SSD as an external drive in the future. He was kind enough to remove the SSD for me.

I found the below option:

I'm just wondering if there are any other less expensive alternatives? I couldn't find anything else online. The OWC enclosure is not outrageously expensive but I'm just looking to be thrifty since I don't plan on making too much use of it.

Thank you so much!

I was in a similar situation, with a extra 2013 500GB blade SSD after buying a used rMBP mid 2015. I noticed that he SSD installed was from 2013, complained and got a later faster SSD plus could keep the 2013 version.

Searched for a while and found that the open box-version of "OWC Envoy Pro USB 3.0 Portable Enclosure for select SSD/Flash Drives from most 2013 & later Macs" at https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MAU3ENPRPCIO/ seemed to be the cheapest version for keeping the disk running in any capacity.

Transcend includes enclosures with their SSD upgrades. Maybe if you contacted them they could sell you the enclosure separately? I don't see any way to do this on their website so you'll probably have to email/call them.
