I just receieved a 120Gb OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD this past weekend. The drive is for a 2011 13" i5 with 4gb of ram. After installing the new drive, I first formatted the drive with 1 partition and then did a fresh OSX install. Then I used time machine to replace my system as it was before the hard drive install. I made sure the OS was up to date, then did a PRAM reset. I've noticed a hit on my battery life (maybe 1 hr) but thats really it. My boot times are between 17 and 19 seconds from when I hit the power button until I see the desktop. Today I decided to do an xbench and aja test on the drive to see how it was doing and was shocked at what I saw. The xbench results are as follows:

Disk Test 458.85
Sequential 274.06
Uncached Write 397.95 244.33 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 414.95 234.78 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 123.13 36.03 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 644.93 324.14 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Random 1408.62
Uncached Write 2070.76 219.21 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 702.51 224.90 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 3113.66 22.06 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 1633.70 303.15 MB/sec [256K blocks]

The AJA disk read/write test that I ran (4 gig file size) is as follows:

I/O Transactions
Frame MB/sec
Read Write
00.0 421.2 35.3
01.0 430.5 456.9
02.0 487.4 449.6

13.0 436.1 436.7
14.0 409.1 442.2
15.0 382.5 450.7

The total average that it gave me was 371 read and 388 write.

Do these numbers seem slow compared to what I should be getting? For these speeds, I'd rather have just purchased an Intel 320 and get back that hour of battery life that I lost with this drive. Any suggestions that I could try or am I just being paranoid? Let me know if there is any important information that I left out. Thanks for any help.

I will run both tests on my 240GB when I get home from work, but from what I remembered they seem to score a bit higher than yours. I have a problem making this drive negotiate at Sata III speed on bootcamp Win 7 tho.

System profiler shows that it is connected at 6 Gigabit speeds. I'm wondering if I should contact OWC about this. Thanks for checking yours for me!

Well under OSX, mine is also negotiating at 6GB/s, but no matter what I do with Windows 7, I cannot seem to enable AHCI... well it's not a big issue since it cannot be compared to factory installed 5400rpm HD. BTW, how much space is being occupied for your drive?

The AJA disk read/write test that I ran (4 gig file size) is as follows:

Your Xbench scores seem fine.
Try to run AJA with 1980x1080, 8-bit with 4GB file size.

I have 70 GB of free space on the drive.

Thanks! Trying that bumped it up to 432 read and 484 write which is perfectly fine by me. I just didn't want to take the hit on battery life without getting the advantages of the sataIII drive. I just wanted to make sure that the drive was working correctly. Thanks for the help!

No worries, made the same mistake myself.

Slow on MBP 2011 17"...

Guys, I just installed my 120GB in my 17", and my AJA benchmarks (1920x1080 8-bit, 4GB) are nowhere close to what you're seeing. It's about 44% utilized, and I've ran AJA on a cloned drive (CCC), as well as just a clean OSX install, and I get roughly the same performance in both cases:

Any ideas??
I know there have been documented issues with 17" and these SATA3 drives, but from the results I've seen of those, at least they hit close to the max 500MB/s once in a while. In my case, it looks like the drive is stuck at 2G/SATA2 speeds...??

The issues on the 17" aren't necessary drive related and may, in fact, be hardware related. Per OWC, this issue seems limited to the 17" models. OWC offers a fix.

Thanks... I tried the hackish tinfoil fix (http://macperformanceguide.com/blog/2011/20110415_1_Tinfoilfix--howto.html), but that didn't do anything. I did place an order for the shielding kit, so we'll see what happens when I get it. The thing that gets me is that while people are reporting erratic performance, what I see is consistent, and consistently low.

Those new Mercurys look better than anything i've seen. Add to that the fact that they 'aren't OCZ' (LOL), and these would be the way to go.

My only concern is re-sale value. It's easy to sell an Intel or a popular OCZ, but OWC?

Any one have any experience selling one of these on Ebay?

I still don't get why it's only Apple sites that I see people giving a damn about resale value.

It's because Macs have very good re-sale value. It reduces total cost of ownership considerably.

If I spend $500 on a HD i have to be able to recoup at least 50% or I wont go there. Actually, if I couldn't recoup this percentage of any my gear I would just own a used iPad and call it a day :D

Or you could get even MORE use out of that drive and laptop buy just using them till they die.

You are actually not recouping anything. If you keep you macbook for 5yrs you have spent a LOT less money than a person that gets a new laptop every 2 or 2.5. If you purchase a refurbished MacBook you are saving even more.

Reselling your old one really ONLY saves money if you don't plan to actually use the computer for it's life, and unless you are doing video work there is really no need to get a new computer until you old ones on its last legs unless you have money to burn.

When it comes to a HDD it sounds like if you are replacing it before its dropped 50% of its cost then you are perpetually buying drives to small or you are creating a LOT of data.

It really sounds like you don't actually use anything you buy, you just get it, then in a year or two resell it to buy something more shiny.

But that's ok. He can recoup a lot by reselling every 1-2 years.

Even way outdated ( tech wise) PowerBooks sell. There are refurbs on newegg for 200.

Yes that's right, there are place holders. Shiny new things to put on display and dust occasionally.

(now if I could some day learn how to use this then I wouldn't need to sell it....hmm)

Grandma wandered into a Mercury Xtreme thread and wants 'One of those fancy SSD thingies to show the PTA ladies"

I just received my 120GB 6G today and I did a fresh install for the OS X into the SSD. Problem is, I'm no where near the advertised speed of up to 559MB/s read, 527MB/s write. Could it be a faulty SSD ? I have a 2011 Macbook Pro 13" 2.7 i7 with RAMs upgraded to 8GB. I only have one partition and never did the TRIM hack.

Hey guys, how do I get this AJA System Test to work? I just tried to run it on Lion to test my new OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G, but when I click "Start" it stops right the next second without performing any tests.

Why?

Btw, why am I getting ONLY 240 MB/s Write and 490 MB/s Read speeds on this drive?? (Blackmagic Disk Speed Test)

same problem ... no solution yet

Having the same low performance issue and AJA is not working in my early 201 MBP 15" with same specs.

I'm ramdomly having problems at starting the computer. Some times I get a folder icon with the question mark blinking.

I've installed all the updates (including the last EFI update) but nothing changes

Did you find a solution? Have you tried the ifixit hard drive sata cable?

I believe the test is incompatible with Lion.

Anyways, I've never experienced other issues you described, though.

It has to do with the low level permissions not be allowed in Lion. I forget exactly what I did to get it to work, but it involves changing the permissions on it to allow the writing to root, which by default is not allowed and not a good idea to do.

jon8, are you still getting ONLY 240 MB/s Write and 490 MB/s Read speeds on this drive with Blackmagic Disk Speed Test? the drive it's supposed to work at 500 MB/s speeds writing and reading

Black Magic is not a good measure of performance with the Sandforce drives, as it has been changed to measure based upon throughout with compressed data and the way it is handled differently with the Sandforce drives (this happened with the latest application update, even los of the manufacturer for Sandforce drives recommend testing with AJA as a baseline).. The AJA is the best tool for measuring Sandforce drives.

I haven't run it lately, but I'd assume it's not much different. This test is not good for Sandforce drives, as squeakr has mentioned.

On a different benchmark I ran, I got 450 MB/s write and 505 MB/s read speeds....
