At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, I'm really not blaming apple on this, but sandforce.

Their firmware is what's causing the problem, not the OS.

I'm curious to see if this works for me, as my issues aren't that bad. Simply setting sleep to never fixes my issues.

It def. seems to be sandforce based SSD's. The ONLY SSD I'm hearing of with next to no issues is the Intel ones, but they are also rather slow at 150mb/s.

To me, just setting sleep to never is DEF. worth the speed increase I get.

HOPEFULLY a OSX-based firmware upgrade tool AND a firmware upgrade come out soon that fixes this issue.

Fair point, but why are there no issues in Windows ?
There are two parties involved .

Hey guys, I am experiencing similar problems with my OWC SSD.

RIght now, I make mine sleep by closing the lid, that seems fine...

However, How can we calibrate the battery? Each time i let the battery run down, it goes to sleep/hibernate and when I start it again, I must restart the computer. Does this have any effect the calibration? Any other ways to calibrate?

I don't see any negative effect on the calibration doing this.

You can actually hold down the power button while it's asleep and force power it down fully, this is what apple recommends on their support site.

I was talking about this in the MR IRC channel. It would appear as long as I do not allow my Mac to sleep, I should be fine. Updating the firmware is a no brainer.

I had...

... similar issues with one of the 240gb drives I bought. No amount of tweaking of sleep parameters resolved the issue. I ended up returning it to OWC and replaced it with a new OWC Mercury 240gb SSD, which has been working flawlessly ever since.

It's a great great drive... I now own 5 of them, and they're all flying along... Really fantastic...

Good luck!

I have newest firmware... wonder what a new drive would do?

For me, "sleep never" is no issues at all... I never let it sleep that way anyways. If I want it to sleep I close the lid.

Just FYI, I bought my drives before the latest firmware update, and am having no issues... I'm reluctant to upgrade until a Mac-based updater tool is available. Don't want to mess with a good thing :)

Could you eleborate ?
It doesn't work in my Windows 7 (64bit) install, and after a bunch of system crashes by the updater I had a hard time getting my OWC SSD to work again .

Still waiting to hear back from OWC customer support.

For the record, what's between me and an occassional MBP brick with two SSDs in it right now is actually InsomniatiX - manually making it a start object (item?) disables sleep and hibernation for good with the corresponding pref settings of Insom. .

What firmware did your new one have?

Are there plans for a MacOS updater? Can the current updater run on WinXP in Fusion?

Based on other posts, it appears OWC will have an OSX updater early 2011.

It cannot run in fusion, because its a virtualized environment and being such, there is no direct access to the hardware (its vitualized)

There is not a way to run against a drive in a USB enclosure?

Nope
From OWC
Use Requirements:
Intel Mac running Windows XP/Vista/7 via Bootcamp*
PC running Windows XP/Vista/7
Available internal motherboard SATA port**
Drive must be formatted in the MBR partitioning scheme prior to running the update

MAFLYNN:

So I cannot put WIN7 on a USB external HDD and boot from that and get the firmware updater to work?

sleep never has fixed my issues. I can shut the lid and sleep no issues.

In my eyes, this is the best upgrade I have ever done to a computer again.

I'll never go back to a HDD again.

Hopefully the OSX firmware updater comes out soon and all will be well.

I just can't wait to see a 500GB SSD with a reasonable price tag on it ;)

Bummer. My OWC Pro 120 just arrived today.

I'd plug it in and see how she runs. You most likely have firmware 343.... as mine was delivered before you.

Just turn your idle sleep to never and you're set (if you're in the same boat as me).

Having to send mine back to OWC :(

Never had the sleep issues just lots of spinning balls and takes an age to start up.

They have been great about it to be fair so hopefully get one that works ok :)

Fingers crossed.

Got 340A13F0

Everything seems to be good so far with both manual and auto sleep on my MacBookPro4,1 with the Pro 120. This is definitely one of the best upgrades I've done in a while. I'm really looking forward to upgrading to a new MBP at work and throwing in a pair of SSDs with RAID 0 and RAID 1.

OWC reply

I just got a reply from OWC that theyre investigating this and will plan for firmware upgrade to resolve this.

So far their responses are very quick and outstanding. I am looking forward to this.

Thats what mine was, same firmware and the 120 version.

Never had any sleep issues it was the other issues made it un-usable.

OWC say that 340A13F0 is their current firmware.

According to the REP from OWC in my post on the 2nd or 1st page of this thread (our actual conversation) the 343..... is the current firmware... which makes sense as it's a higher number.

You can update that 340... to 343... but if you aren't having issues, I'd leave it for now as 343... has the hibernate issue.
