Hi Guys,

I have a Mid 2017 iMac 5k base with 1tb fusion drive. Currently, I have an external Samsung SSD T5 (500GB)transfer speed of 420 to 520 MBPS.

The internal SSD fusion drive of the iMac only has 28GB , but it is a PCIe connection that shows up at 800-1300+ MBPs....

I like the internal ssd speed of the fusion drive.
I’m curious about the Samsung PCIe SSD
internal with a Thunderbolt 3 PCIe chassis. Bestbuy has the Samsung 960 EVo on sale.

Will this combo work as an external SSD drive for my iMac?

Thanks!

Does anyone know what is a good brand for PCIe 3 M2 to PCIe 3 x16 adapter?
There are a few brand online...

Hi!

Did you find a solution for this? I'm considering exactly the same two products for an iMac 5k 2017 and I don't know if it will work with a NVMe PCIe SSD.

Thanks!

No. Aftermarket PCIe SDD might not be supported by the MacOS.

Thanks for your fast answer.
I don't understand why nobody make a NVMe PCIe M2 enclosure to TB3 to work with MacOS externally.

Thanks for your help

Hi! Yeah I know those, they look pretty amazing but can’t afford it, maybe external PCIe SSD drives prices will be democratized in the near future once there is more competition.

There is also this one

a little bit cheaper but only 1TB

BTW,

I ended up getting this one... It’s fast enough for me. I just kept it on sleep mode. It takes a bit of time booting up though since it’s connected via Thunder Bolt 3...

I’m deciding right now between that Akitio (it looks great) and this one

https://www.amazon.com/Enclosure-UN...6537&sr=1-3-fkmr1&keywords=Inateck+USB-C+RAID

Both can reach the same speeds and the Unitek is half the price. For a little bit more of the cost of two 1TB SSDs plus the enclosure, i could buy the Sandisk Extreme 900 1.92TB that does the same thing in a cleaner way and shape, but i’d lose the option of upgrade to a four SSDs RAID in the future.

There is a dell tb3 drive incoming in feb

2.6GB/s speeds.

This seems very promising and the design looks very cool. 800$ for 1TB is still a little insane i think. What is certain is that this is the future of external drives for 4k and 6k video editing.

Thank you all for your inputs
