I came on with a similar question. I just tried in vain installing 4GB of RAM I bought from Newegg. Nothing but black screen at startup. DId i buy the wrong RAM or is it defective?

Well, technically it's the wrong RAM...it's 800 MHz, but the latest MBP takes 667 MHz RAM. But in theory (I haven't been following memory developments recently, so I don't know the specifics here), the RAM should work fine and simply downclock to 667 MHz. However, there is at least one report in the reviews there at Newegg from a Penryn MBP user saying that it doesn't work in that machine while it does work in an older MBP.

I had some problems with my OWC RAM initially, but after seating/unseating the modules several times, swapping the slot positions, and a couple power-ups, all was fine. Haven't had any problems since, but it was a bit nerve-racking.

You bought the wrong RAM - that is 800 MHz RAM -- not only is there no advantage to using faster RAM, there are many reports of 800 MHz modules not functioning in the Penryn MB and MBP machines. This is most likely because the RAM does not have the SPD values correctly written to function at 667 like the MBP asks it to.

This is the difference between NewEgg and a Mac-aware seller. NewEgg makes no commitment of compatibility and all of the work is up to you to choose the right thing. A reputable reseller will help you choose the correct RAM and guarantee its compatibility in your specific machine.

Hopefully, you can return the OCZ and NewEgg will waive the restocking charge and the shipping, otherwise you'll be out some bux.

Thanks guys. Yea indeed just the wrong RAM and I can be another voice to confirm that this RAM doesn't work on the NEW MBPs. It's all good, Newegg says they will take it back minus restocking fee which is like $13, but I'm still getting a $15 MIR so the $2 will go towards shipping. Nearly nothing lost, just some time.

That's another pet peeve of mine with NewEgg -- you get slammed for shipping and restocking if you choose wrong.

MIR -- ooh, I hope you haven't already clipped the UPC code off the package... you'll need to check if it is still returnable in that case. Pretty sure you can't return the goods and still collect the MIR.

Yea I asked the guy thinking that might be a problem but he said it was fine since with RAM they don't require the little plastic case (read: original packaging) to be returned.

For those interested, my 4 GB of OWC went in no problem on my new Penryn 2.4 MBP. I also transferred the factory 2 GB of ram into my girlfriends regular MacBook with no problems.

I can only got 3 GB

I bought the same RAM OCZ2M8004GK for my latest MBP order last week, removed 2 1GB chips and installed 2 4Gb Kit, nothing work, I leave 1 known good 1Gb and install each 2 Gb to isolate which one of the new RAM is bad, all working fine, system show I have 3GB

I then remove the 1 GB out and install both new RAM, MBP does not boot at all

Check the siting and seem like no issue there,so If the new 4GB kit not defects, what seem to be the issue, can some one share some advice

Thanks

If you suspect you have bad RAM, you don't need to mix your Apple RAM and your new RAM. Just try each RAM module one at a time. You don't need both slots occupied for the laptop to work.

Too much problem with the ocz2m8004gk kit

Like what I said on my post, I tried to isolate which 2GB module is bad by swapped them out, both was working fine with 1 known good original 1gb module, which give me the total of 3GB, test both 2 new 2gb modules with 1gb module installed

when I put both 2gb module in the slots, MBP can not boot at all, but both module was confirmed good, if install with 1Gb module to get 3gb

I have no clue now rather than send them back and may be buy Kingston or other brand

Too much frustration now

I hope your realize 2GB of RAM is adequate.

2 GB of RAM is adequate for what? Im not the OP. I havent discussed everything I use my MBP for.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, 800 MHz RAM is not the proper RAM for the latest MacBook Pros. You need 667 MHz RAM. Again, if you're not familiar with RAM specs, go with a Mac-knowledgeable vendor like OWC or Data Memory Systems that utilizes a memory wizard to only offer you the proper RAM for your system and guarantees it to be compatible.
