480gb

They now have a 480GB option too. Near $1600 but it's there. In case anyone is interested.

We keep hearing about SSD prices coming down, and it just really isn't happening. Makes me kind of sad. When I ordered my ThunderBook I chose the 128GB SSD as it was the cheapest option so that I could eventually upgrade to a bigger, faster one. But I'm probably going to be stuck with it for awhile as I can't justify spending $500+ on a decent 256GB model. I also don't want to go back to platter-based HDDs because I'm spoiled by the speed of the SSD. Guess I'll have to keep dumping my files to my big external drive when I finish my various projects.

My dream is when SSDs only cost 3x as much as HDDs. Right now you can get a good 500GB laptop HDD for about $60. OWC has a 480GB SSD for $900. That's 15x more expensive! I understand that this is newer technology, but it almost seems like there is some sort of price-fixing involved in the industry. Even if the 256GB models came down to around $300 I'd be more inclined to buy.

My 7200 rpm hard drive is still chugging along just fine. How much faster can things really get, aside from boot times?

Well, iTunes should open up instantly, and that's always a good thing. Actually, everything should open just about instantly. Definitely noticeable and worth the money.

A lot.

Plus it won't die when your comp gets bumped around or picked up by someone while you're rendering/DL/installing something. The smaller storage and the garbage bits however are definitely still issues ...

Working?

Hi!

Did anyone tried those OWC SSDs? I read on the internet that other SSD brand was not working properly in MBA.

thanks!

The cheap one is half the price of the AIR itself. $150 would be a nice starting point.

You can't compare hardware upgrades to the overall computer itself. SSD's are going for $2/GB currently, and this upgrade seems to fall in with this standard.
