Those who own the Edition models (18k gold, ceramic and titanium casings), how often do you buy another Apple Watch?

I’m asking because I do own a SBTi S7, and it cost a bomb. The second hand market doesn’t do justice for the Edition models here in my country. The average price is about the same as SS or even Alu models. So I might be using this watch for another 2-3 years. I’ve to give the S8 a miss.

The watches don’t really change much from year to year. So keeping for 2-3 years should be fine. And if Apple changes the hardware design, there will probably be even less new features.

I’ve always done the stainless steel ones but am thinking I may get titanium next. You just have to know that it’s going to depreciate terribly. Like you said, there’s almost no difference between aluminum, steel and titanium on the used market. Those buyers want a deal. They don’t typically care about the material and such.

I alternate between 1-2 years, depending on the updates and new features.

That's true and it's a shame how some devalue premium materials on watches.

I don't own an Edition - SS is as far as I've gone. In the end, I'd guess the typical answer will be, "I keep it just as long as anyone with an aluminum model keeps theirs." The premium materials don't affect the technological life of the electronics and software inside the case.

From my perspective it's all about disposable income - if you have enough of it you may choose to spend on premium materials just because you can and it suits your fancy. I could easily afford SS, but it was not so easy to justify Edition (and nothing about Edition has tickled my fancy).

It's little different than what wines you drink, whether you frequent restaurants that serve copious amounts of truffles and caviar, or whether you buy designer couture.

I have a S3 aluminum and am considering a SS because I prefer the look. I just wish the jump in price wasn't so extreme. Then again, I am going on owning this for 5 years now so maybe not as big of a concern.

I have the S6 Titanium and plan on keeping it for a while. I've owned aluminum and steel Apple Watches and went into the titanium purchase knowing that the premium models just don't hold their value. I wanted a sapphire screen and also wanted my watch to be under the radar, so titanium was worth it to me.

I can‘t confirm this narrative. Maybe it‘s a regional thing, but over here (Europe/Germany) all Apple Watches hold their value equally, percentage-wise. After the next Series has been released, the previous Series (used but in good condition) sells for approx. 50-65% of the original sales price. Of course, in Dollars/Euros, the more expensive Watches depreciate more, but that‘s just math.

Why is it a shame?

Because it goes beyond aesthetics. For example, titanium has a sheen yet it is highly scratch resistant. So in my country where people expects to find Edition models priced at the Alu model price point in the used market, it tells me how much people devalue premium materials. And I find that a shame because these premium metals brings a lot to the table.

I think it’s great that people can get these different finishes for the same low, low prices in the used market. Consumer Power to the People!
