P52 Week 3: Water (Jan 15 - Jan 21)

That took a couple of attempts…

I've never attempted an image like this, but imagine it could get frustrating really quickly if you can't nail the timing. Thanks for playing along.

Burst mode shooting helps somewhat, but I still only got four decent pictures out of almost 300. Although getting the focus right also was quite an issue.

@katbel lovely clouds.

I saw in the POTD thread you also did the water drop thing. Did you or @Janichsan use a flash setup or just natural light? I think these are probably easier with flash (assuming you have one and know how to use it).

Surprisingly, you can actually buy kits to setup for nothing but waterdrops. It's not something I think I would ever use or get the money's worth out of, but some people really love these things.

No flash, but today was sunny or at least at the last attempts cloudy but still bright.
Good to know about the kit. Thanks
I was thinking that using oil or milk would be easier because of the different composition but I will try it in the week of the milk 😉

Thanks for going out for a "real" photo! I think the quality of this one is better than your iPhone one, but the phone one has a bit more visual interest since it's wide angle. Did you take a camera version also facing the ferris wheel? It would be a better comparison I think. 🙂
Missed this reply the other day…

Was good to go out with the Nikon and tripod! Quite cold though so I didn’t change lenses, but indeed shot the Ferris wheel as well. Just wasn’t satisfied with the result. But yes, please check them out:

Also just natural light, like @katbel.

I just saw PhilBoogie's link to a similar picture with a quite simple setup, but I remember there's also a way a more elaborated way by properly timing the firing of the flash.

 That's a highly specialised tool if I've ever seen one.

Crushingly, crushingly busy this week. And keeping within in one's own voice is a great thing to remember. Bodies of water are certainly available in Colorado but less than on the left and east coast, obviously. We're prairie and bits of desert here but we have icy water (snow), inside-of-house water and so forth. Reservoirs all around. I'll see what I can do this weekend. Can't wait!

Right now, the water we have around is snow. The light is dreary. It's fairly cold. It's icy to walk around. Blah....

One photographic voice I have that I haven't spoken with in quite some time - and it was my first love - is wildlife "in context". I could spend all day watching American Crows. They are exceptionally intelligent. They're notoriously difficult to photograph (at least for me) - they mostly turn out black as in this image but in the right light they have a shimmer or iridescence to them that's beautiful.

Unsure if I should keep the focus on the eye or rather on the tongue/water.
Or probably just using a higher f-stop. What do you think? F2.8, 1/400 and ISO 800 on an apsc were used.
I'd say for the exercise, you'd want the tongue to be the focus. Even if the cat's eye is not in focus, I think the viewer's eye would be drawn to where the motion is.

Yes! I agree with Darmok; it really depends on what the goal of your story is, but to me it seems like the story is lapping up the water, so I would put my focus there. 🙂

On a frozen lake this morning. I'd gone out with the intention of seeing a lot of Canada Geese but none were there. American Crows and gulls (I don't know my gulls very well).

I love these! Especially the second one, I like seeing him in a neighborhood.
