I have pages 09 and I am trying to do 2 columns on only half the page. I want the top have to be one column and the bottom half to be 2 columns. Everytime i hit the 2 column button it makes the whole page 2 columns. I've tried selecting the just the text that I want to be in 2 columns and that doesn't work either. I can do this in word so I'm guessing there is a way to do it in pages as well. Anyone know how?

Try the Page Layout as opposed to Word Processing when creating your document. Create 2 text boxes--one on top and the other on the bottom half. Select the bottom text box and go to the Layout Inspector and toggle to 2 columns.

From the menu bar, go to Insert > Layout Break. That will bring it back to one column.

If you choose Section Break instead, the same thing will happen, but on the next page.
