If I create a Word document in Pages, it is sometimes 50x larger than the same document created in MS Word.

As an example, on my iPad, I created a simple document in both Pages and MS Word containing just the words "It's a beautiful day" and emailed it to myself. The .docx file from Pages (created from a blank template) weighed in at a whooping 468KB! The .docx file created in MS Word (also from a blank template) was a mere 11KB.

I noticed this same bloating when using Pages on my iPhone.

What gives?

The bug is there in the Mac version of Pages too. It embeds a large PNG file in any file exported to DOCX format. It embeds three of them if you export in DOC format. The PNG files are defined as the background fill for shapes, but as you aware they are included even if you don't define any shapes.

I reported the bug to Apple back in June as rdar://17089255. My bug is untouched as of today.
