.pages files and compatibility with Microsoft office

I need to send a few Assignments to my college tutor, I have used Pages '09, and they have saved as that file type, I've tried changing it to .doc but It won't open. Will the .pages file format work and open properly in ANY version of Microsoft word ?

You can't just change the extension. You have to export it as a .doc.

If you want to keep the formatting absolutely, positively identical, export it to a PDF.
