Fairly simple, I've added an automatic contents page to my document, but I was hoping to have it use two columns instead of one to conserve space since none of the headings are especially wide. However, when I change the number of columns, it screws up the contents, whatever is used to space out the titles and the page numbers doesn't seem to adjust automatically.

I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to do this without manually entering the contents?

I got it to work.

I added a section break between the Table of Contents and the rest of a document, so that the TOC was two columns and the rest just a single column.
I did have to add a right tab near the new right margin, but once I did, it worked fine.

Aha! This was the part I was missing! I shy away from tabs with a vengeance normally as they seem to require an inordinate amount of processing in all of my pages documents, but adding one seems to have fixed the table of contents as a two-column layout, thanks!
