Is there a way in Pages to shade an area of text without putting the text in a table? What I want would sort of be like highlighting the text, but I want to include the entire line of the text and not just the word itself. This is very easy in Word by just going to Borders & Shading but I have not been able to find this feature in Pages.

In the Inspector, look under Text, More. You'll see Background Fills. Select "character" and the color you want from the picker. You can then define this as a character style and use it wherever you want.
