Hello,

How can we easily activate "Tiered Numbers" for title ?
I'd like to have it enable each time I use a paragraph styles, but have to activate this option at each time 🤯

Best regards

You can create a paragraph style that does what you wish.

The default styles cannot be modified - the idea is to have a standard starting point. The solution is to create the styles that you need. You can learn how in Pages > Help

Did it work for you ? Custom style doesn't enable "Tiered Numbers" for me ...

I don't see a way to make that work, or any numbered/bulleted list for matter, as a paragraph style.

Ok, I did some more homework...

First off, you would have to create it as a List style, not a Paragraph style.

Pages Help includes a topic, "Create a hierarchical list style."

I found you can modify an existing List style.

I started a Lettered list
I clicked the Tiered Numbers checkbox
Right after doing that, "Lettered" in the Bullets & Lists checkbox acquired an asterisk
I clicked on Lettered* to open the dropdown list, and Lettered in the dropdown had an Update button to the right. Clicking Update recorded the change to the style
There's also a ">" icon to the right that, naturally, opens a list of additional options

To undo the change, I then de-selected Tiered Numbers and followed the procedure above to Update the style again.

Have fun!

List Style adding only number, so I have to use Paragraph style too. It's so boring...
In Word, we can have both together.

I will give up with Pages and instead of using style I will use copy-paste, it will be really faster.

Yes, I tried it yesterday before answering.

It save the style, but only in the "list style". So have to apply "paragraph style" then "list style".
Can't apply both together.

Why are you trying to create a paragraph style? List style is where this is done. It's a list, not a paragraph.

I created a Tiered Numbered list style and it works pretty well. It's best to use the indent and outdent Format buttons (although tab works ok for indenting). Once the return key is hit, the style is no longer active. Those indent and outdent buttons can also be added to the toolbar for easier access. Unless there's a way to save global list styles, it would need to be recreated in a new document. No time at the moment to research whether that's available in today's Pages version update.

Following ApfelKuchen's instructions I was able to get a mixed format of the following for example:

4. Safety
4.1. Personal
1. PPE-1
A. Happy
1) Foo
5. Other

It does require selecting and deselecting Tiered Numbers then updating your custom preset.

Only thing I haven't figured out how to do is get it to use 4.0 as a starting number instead of 4.

Well damn, it won't keep my formatting here... imagine indents as appropriate.

I'll take Foo for $500, Alex. 😉

The only number formats available are in that list, so we can add a decimal place to the default "1., 2." etc.

So I create the first one as I want (like if I wanted to create a "paragraph style")
I applied the "list style" in order to have the number, and I enable the "Tiered Numbers".
After that, I saved this "list style" as a new one (I tried too with replacing actual style)

I apply the "list style" to new texte and used tab in order to have the subnumber. It give me the 2nd part.

Have to enable "Tiered Numbers" again (using tab remove it) and I have the 3rd part.

Still far from the one I want and that we can define as style in Word. So in order to do that, I have to do in app :
  • Word : 1 clic
  • Pages : 3 clic ...

Try using the Indent and Outdent buttons instead of tab (as suggested above). I was able to do it without losing the formatting and needing to re-enable Tiered Numbers.

If you need to use return to create space between the lists, it will turn off the list style and you'll need to select that style again.

It feels like from your description you may be missing a step when saving the List Style, but I'm not sure. Maybe start with the List Style you've created instead of a Paragraph Style. Just select the text font, size and color without using a Paragraph style and then create (or select) the Tiered Number List Style.

It's what I have already done... You can find bellow this new test.
"List Style" doesn't save :
  • "Tiered Numbers" if I use Indent and Outdent buttons (same than with tab)
  • Font of text (other than the number/letter one)
In your screenshot, it seems to be the same for the font. I don't see any color or bold font...
