Painfully slow data and call quality is terrible

My 1st Gen iPhone lately has been terribly slow if at all connected to EDGE data, and call quality, even if i have 3-4 bars, is terrible and i can hardly hear other people. I had the SIM card replaced with no help at all. Anyone know if there is an option besides getting a new phone and paying more per month for what i wanted in the first place, a phone with data?

You could try a DFU restore, which might improve things. Here's a link:
