I’ve had my watch over 2 years now. It’s the space black series 0 with the link bracelet. Bought it back at the start when there was a massive waiting period - fun times.

Got a new strap for Christmas, so I took the original off for a clean and I noticed the paint was coming away on the back around where the model text was around the HR sensors.

It actually hasn’t been cleaned for well over 6 months, it was getting pretty disgusting. I’m fairly certain it wasn’t like that last time I had a look underneath it. So I can only imagine the oils from my skin and friction could of caused it.

Anyway, from what I remember and have read around the Internet / this forum, these watches use diamond-like coated and something like this should definitely not happen, ever.

Has anyone else had this issue, or seen this issue on the forums anywhere?
I’ve seen it mentioned to of happened with the aluminium watches, but the appearance seems a lot different and much worse.

Attached a picture so you can see what’s happened.

Thanks!

This is very common. Especially with the first generation.

I have seen this in the aluminum models but specifically the SS version. Always around the engraving. Interesting.

Looks weird. Take it to an Apple store and see what they have to say.

Already have, forgot to mention.

The guy said they’d have to send it off, but doesn’t think they could do anything out of warranty and I’m not paying £250 for a new watch. But he didn’t even know it was DLC - even got a bit argumentative over the fact, but it’s probably because they don’t advertise it as such now.

Might ring Apple up and see what they say, they might have more experience dealing with watches.

This doesn’t look like paint chipping. This looks like corrosion around the pitting due to sweat.

The diamond like carbon coating is a protective layer that is very durable, but there is no evidence saying that this "Should not ever happen". The DLC is not impervious to every environment the watch is subjected to.

And as others have said, being that you have Not regularly or cleaned it, perhaps the corrosion started to degrade the DLC coating on the back of your watch. Which is exactly where the watch would have The most wear due to sweat.
