I wouldn't use the Pre simply because its new. Bugs, glitches, etc. Iphone going to be on 3.0 when Sprint Pre drops. I guarantee they plan on releasing it the same time the Pre launches to totally eclipse the Pre's launch.

iPhone has an itunes store full of thousands of apps, games, movies, tv shows.

About the only thing I see that Pre does that the Iphone post 3.0 won't do is background processes.

Name something else Pre slays iPhone in... the Pre interface is by and large a big mimic of iPhone. I say the only real people jumping on the Pre are people already on Sprint.

I tell the following story as my own opinion, experience, and wants/needs. This is not intended to be picked apart....

I am stuck with sprint until September 2010. I have been with them since 1999 and have loved them and cursed them out. The phone plans are great and the customer service is terrible.

I have the ipod touch and mainly want the iphone to use as an ipod touch with constant internet access, with the phone and camera being nice "add-ons." I don't think a lot of people use their iphone as an ipod.

When I re-upped my contract with Sprint last fall, I didn't go with the iphone due to AT&T price gouging and the memory. On top of that I wanted other features that Apple has added with the software update that is coming out. In addition, I would like an ichat camera. However, at least 32 GB and BETTER SECURITY are musts before I will pay the Sprint early termination fee and jump ship to AT&T. Plus it is difficult to justify the extra cost when I just bought a ipod touch in January, but again, constant internet is VERY important to me with a 6 hour round-trip commute a day and the main reason that I want an iphone.

...and onto the Pre

I will consider shelling out the full price of the pre (It's not time for an upgrade) if it has an OS as easy as the ipod touch/iphone, better security, and one touch buttons for contacts, clock, calculator, to do's, notes, email, AOL IM, Tetris, Labyrinth, Solitaire, Crash Kart, Facebook, Twitter, Weight tracker, period tracker, white noise, turn by turn GPS, weather, radio streaming for NPR, you tube, google earth, password keeper, and the ability to lock individual apps.

I think one of the biggest marks against all other phones intended to compete with the iphone is that ipod has a huge following and some people just don't want to go back to the olden days of carrying two devices that they use all the time. Yes, other phones are able to play music, but they aren't ipods.

The Palm Pre sucks because they probably won't offer a efficient/hassle less media managing solution like iTunes + iPod. And it's supposedly touting multimedia capabilities.

The Pre, in all regards, is a failed ripped off copy of the iPhone. They basically took the iPhone and made it less cool, less beautiful, less appealing, and made themselves a lawsuit magnet for Apple. Palm is no longer a source of innovation, they just took Apple's IP and gotten sued.

How do I start this?...

First off, the Pre won't be anywhere near as hyped outside of the "geek world". There won't be a huge launch, covered nationally for it like the iPhone. In fact, there will probably be nearly no ads on TV for it. Plus it's with Sprint, a carrier that many people are not familiar with. The iPhone is just more of a "consumer" smartphone, the Pre just seems like the tech-savvy phone.

Plus, the iPhone is Apple. That means it will have the iPod and iTunes functions on it. You won't get that on the Pre. People who buy on iTunes can't use it with the Pre, meaning many people are "locked in" to Apple's music devices. Unless iTunes Plus is meant to eliminate that, correct me if I'm wrong.

The App Store on the iPhone will be a lot better than the Pre's. I remember hearing in the Developer Keynote that there have been over 30 million iPhones and iPod Touches sold. That means developers are going to want to develop for the iPhone, since they will reach a huge mass market. I predict a lot more worthwhile apps to come.

But, competition is good for Apple. Like it was stated before, if they completely dominated the market, the iPhone would not be as affordable as it is today. (not including goddamn AT&T.) It also helps them to grow, and to introduce new things to keep the iPhone fresh and new.

I don't see a reason for there to be. .............. and 3D gaming isn't really a smartphone feature.

Comedy. Right there.

Here's some more.

“640K ought to be enough for anybody.” -Bill Gates (1981)

If it had 3D, Pre would be screaming from the rooftops, but it doesn't because palm is making a slightly better then average texting phone. And there is nothing wrong with that, I just wish Palm would not compare themselves to the iPhone, but I guess when you are running out of money faster then AIG, and sales are dropping like a lead duck, one says rash and stupid things like Roger mcCnabee(sp) said about every iPhone owner switching to the pre in June.

25,000 apps for nearly 100 unique tasks.

And growing. Of course quantity does not equal quality. But when you have a mom and pop store with 1000 items and a megamart with 25K which one is more likely to have what you need?

it will actually run faster than compiled iPhone applications

I haven't researched.

We agree.

Sorry to get off track here but this totally stuck out. Wow! Are you serious? I thought the 4 hour round-trip commute I used to do was bad but you have me beat by 50%!

Yup...up at 4...leave for the bus at 4:45....ride bus from 5 to 6:45....ride metro for 35 minutes....catch shuttle or walk to building....do the opposite in a longer time period to get home. I'm working on my doctorate on public transportation :D

Ok, maybe I missed the boat but what's so great about the Palm Pre that is actually gaining some traction against the iPhone? I know that there has been "other" phones to have tried and rivaled the iPhone but now I'm hearing Palm Pre here and Palm Pre there, etc.

Can someone just give a high level of specifically what's so great about the Palm Pre?
Traction, they haven't sold 1 freaking Palm Pre.

Comedy. Right there.

Hey nutsnbolts, my name is BJ DeHut and I am a representative for Sprint. The main reason the Pre has been getting so much buzz is its unique user interface. It is the smoothest and easiest to use smartphone operating system and has been receiving awards as well as a lot of praise. For a more detailed answer I think this video (footage from a recent Palm & Sprint webinar), it is a demo of the phone in action, so you’ll be able to see for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6OwkN0GL1E
