UPDATE - I have just got back to Italy after my vacation in Canada. While in Toronto I took my Macbook to the Apple Store and without batting an eyelid, they changed the top case at no cost. They also gave me, FREE, an old never used charger that they had, as the new stile ones with new attachment, did not work on my laptop. Apple Italy and Apple Europe (Ireland) refused to do anything about the crack or the charger!!

Glad they helped you out. That is the way it should be.

BTW, is the blackbook less prone to cracking, is the topcase a different material? I have the early 2008 model and still no cracks. I have AppleCare until next year. Meanwhile, two of my friends' whitebooks 2006 and early 2008 have had cracks.

i think far fewer black Mabooks have had the problem of cracks. I have seen on the internet photo's of cracks on the black one but it does not seem to be as widespread.

I agree. Also in the EU the guarantee by law has to be 2 years. Has Apple extended the guarantee to 2 years? Of course not! They would rather sell you something that you should legally already be getting. Sony, like many other brands, increased their guarantee to 2 years and some by even more!!

Glad you got it sorted out. Unfortunately I can only confirm that Apple Europe/Asia (outside Japan) are MUCH more restrictive in agreeing to repairs than Apple America.

AppleCare should get you the same level of service everywhere. We're paying more for the privilege of getting screwed.

They'd be harder to spot. Bri65 the EU doesn't pay more for their products to that N. America can pay less, that's just stupid.

Apart from being told that what I have written is "stupid", I am not sure if I have understood your message. Are you saying that in the EU Apple products do not cost more than in N. America? If so please tell me how much the old white Macbook was being sold for in the US? In 2008 I paid EUro 1,300 for my Macbook in Italy. At the time 1 Euro was worth +/- USD 1.55, which meant that it costed me aprox. USD 2,000. Even at today’s exchange rate of 1/1.26 EUro 1,300 would be just over USD 1,600. The prices we pay in the EU for Apple products are not the result transport costs, otherwise a number of Italian products would not be cheaper in US than they are in Italy. Trust me they are!! It is obvious that a company like Apple will sell their products at the highest price possible where possible. The higher the profit they make abroad the easier it is for them to sell their products at cheaper prices on the home market (main market) where prices are generally much cheaper across the board.
Just in case you are tkaing this personally, I am not making any comments against N. America. They are aimed at Apple!!
