Yeah I use mine all the time, but I just wish it ran in the background.

any other internet radio apps?

I'd love to listen to some of the regular iTunes/internet radio stations - like Radio Paradise. Any likelihood of an app for that?

Pandora is in fact pretty friggin nice, and I recommend it to anybody.

1. Be great if it had background playing, like iPod
2. My "Sea Shanty" station degenerated into generic acoustic folk
3. Works great on edge, to my surprise

Not available in Canada

I used to love Pandora online. I was a great way to learn about new bands. It broadened my interests and bands. Now you can't get it in Canada due to laws and stuff. So anyways I'm now using Last.fm and VisuaRadio to get my streaming audio. But I've only got 6GB of data, which kinda sucks, but it's enough to do a bit of streaming.

Labels could possibly be supporting Pandora as a way to get people to listen to new music?

I think that's what it is -- Pandora's basic concept is to identify music you might like based on your interests -- so it essentially forces you to listen to new music. And it gives you opportunities to buy those songs if you like them. Makes sense -- probably more likely to generate click-throughs than the conventional FM radio is.

My other thought is that the labels may pay Pandora for informatics -- Pandora's data, even de-identified can tell a lot about music consumption trends (e.g. which songs that get matched get thumbed up and down) and can help refine other channels of marketing for the music industry.

It makes sense that the music industry actually try working smarter to improve their revenue generation, rather than focusing only on suing pirates and complaining about iTunes while their income keeps dipping year on year. ;)

I don't have Pandora on my iPhone yet, but I love it on the desktop....

Download VisuaRadio, as it has Radio Paradise. I think it's a $3.99 download.

I bought Tuner by Nullriver just to listen to Radio Paradise, and it works great. I'm relatively certain it handles the AAC+ streams as well, so you can get a nice sounding stream at 64kbps.

The Pandora app does have a pop up drawer with 'Buy Now from iTunes' so I guess the labels can be happy about that. Maybe there's some sort of kick back from iTunes sales?

I agree that Pandora and AOL Radio are killer apps - really surprised to see it in the app store. almost removes the need for Sirius/XM

Now all I need is a SlingBox player for streaming TV!

I'm confused tho, if I can get it streamed to my iPhone, WHY would I want to buy it on iTunes? :)

Great interface, but it's only in mono! Probably why it works so well for EDGE.

Last.fm is in stereo, but I dont like the interface as much.

Well, you can't pick the song you want, for one. Pandora plays songs you might like based on qualities from a song or artist you choose. Also, you can only skip a track 6 times in an hour, so there's no way to constant skip ahead until you come across the song you want.

I've been having an issue with Pandora on EDGE though. Everyone keeps saying how great it works, but it kept breaking up for me as I was walking around NYC yesterday. Is my Pandora messed up, or is EDGE more "jammed up" in a large, condensed city like New York?

Gotcha, that makes sense now. :)

I still haven't upgraded to 2.0 firmware yet, but if/when I do, I might give Pandora a try. Right now I love all my customization and don't want to give it up, but it's getting harder to resist the app store. :)

i love it but my issue is its streamed in mono so when i listen to it on headphones it only comes out in one ear which is lame

ootunes for stereo pandora on iphone

if you absolutely must have stereo pandora, try ootunes... costs a bit more (than free of course), and is harder to set up, but it does more too...

ooTunes can also play some of (the non-Real player) bbc radio streams (there's about 8 of them and all but one appears to work outside the UK).

I agree! I would LOOOOOVE to have the BBC iPlayer for TV and Radio. I'm stuck streaming radio over RealPlayer. I really wish they'd let us pitiful americans buy a license.

I think you are correct, which is why they call it the "music genome project."

It plays out of both when I use it.

Warning: make sure you stop Pandora when you're done or it will continue playing and drain your battery.

It plays out of both, but it's the same mono channel. Listen to pink floyd, or something else that uses a lot of stereo effects and you'll hear the difference (if you are familiar enough with the music...). Probably most people don't care though for a lot of music...

I realize that it's monaural, but I was responding to a poster who said it came out on only one channel on his earphones. That should not happen.

thats so weird, it plans on both headphones with the ones that came with my iphone but on the ones i usually use (the ones apple released that have different sized rubber ear things) it plays very quiet and only in one ear.

Are you using a 3G iPhone or an EDGE iPhone? Do the headphones you're talking about work correctly for anything else -- iPod function, etc? It sounds more like defective headphones or ones that don't fit the EDGE iPhone's headphone jack or something like that....

Brilliant!

Pandora is great! It's marketing and research genius, so I guarantee they get paid. I think I've already clicked through and bought a couple songs from listening to it on Pandora.

It would definitely be nice if it could run in the background, that and poor sound quality are the only flaws to a great setup. Small prices to pay for an amazing, FREE service! I kept expecting to hear ads, but never happened!

Definitely a recommend...

Really is a great app. I think its the best on the app store right now.

I dont get how something like this survives.

Who pays for their bandwidth? How come they can do this for free, don't the labels charge to use the music?

Pandora is ad-supported. According to the Web site, they have not implemented advertising on the iPhone version, but they will soon. You can eliminate the ads by paying a few bucks a month.

The licensing is complex but, basically, licensing music is much cheaper under "Internet Radio" terms. Pandora has to follow a bunch of rules to get these terms. That's why you can't select a specific song or specific artist exclusively, you can't rewind songs, you can't skip more than 6 songs an hour, you won't hear the same artist more than twice an hour, etc, etc. Even with these restrictions licensing the music is still their largest expense.
