The Soviet Union was never really socialist. How to tell? When leaders are rich and the people are poor. In an ideal socialist society, everyone is equal. In a perfect world, socialism would be a better choice than capitalism. Not the best choice, but a better choice. (Example: ideal capitalism allows people to starve, while ideal socialism supports everybody). The "People's Republic" of China is a dictatorship, with a mix of socialist and capitalist ideas added in. Most people don't realize how capitalist China is. I don't know a lot about Korea.

Point is, you're wrong. Those aren't fully socialist societies.

Interestingly, China's people have only been doing better as the government adopts more and more capitalist ideas. Socialism completely disregards incentives, the things that impel people to succeed, and thus is a false ideal. In fact, socialism incentives people to do nothing, since that yields them the best work-to-gain ratio: the ultimate free-rider problem. If you want to talk about ideals, the ideal situation is one where nobody has to work and can just wish things into existence. But that's about as realistic. At least capitalism tries to align the incentives of everybody (with the problems arising only in markets with large entry barriers).

You're absolutely right. The public/consumers are hypocrites. So Pandora is going to add ads, boom, all the so called "supporters" are leaving to another "free" service. If Pandora going to charge money for their app, nobody will use them anymore. Just look at podcasts. All of them are free. Those that tried to charge money, are left with no listeners. Those that use ads have people complaining about the ads. We live in a ignorant-cheapskate-take-all consumers world. Pandora days are numbered, while Soundexchange is raking the dough. Whose to blame? We, the consumers, for supporting the RIAA (by listening/watching/buying into their crap music and artists) and electing corrupt officials. This is only the tip of the iceberg, and people are still ignorant about the underlying issue.

I still don't get how anyone reading this thread gets this from those upset by the impending shutdown of Pandora. THAT is what we are upset about, not the introduction of advertising. If that's what it takes for Pandora to be profitable and remain in operation, more power to them.

Anarchism FTW :D

The funniest thing about "anarchism" as an idealogy is that most people espousing it tend to be limp-wristed clowns who wouldn't last 5 minutes if anarchy broke out. The truly strong usually want to help the weak, not destroy them because they can. I'm not saying you fall into that category; just an observation.

I think you misunderstand or misread socialism, because this is a common argument that I've seen no evidence for. I hear Marx quoted as saying "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" -- but this doesn't mean the absence of meritocracy, merely that the requirements of modern life be distributed equally in some way. I personally take it to mean public education, public healthcare, and some method of insuring that children (at least) are fed.

Perhaps you misunderstood my statement. I'm not talking about the ideals of socialism as they exist in a book, I'm talking about socialism in reality, which means massive government bureaucracy which actually does more harm than good. In a socialistic state, you may have universal healthcare but how long do you have to wait to see a doctor (or worse, a specialist)? And who pays for it all? If everyone has the same income then everyone suffers the crippling taxes, not just the people who have so much money they can bare it.

I don't see those as bad things. It is, at least, an attempt to level an unlevel playing field; as any kid going through a sociology course can tell you, the single greatest determiner of future wealth is childhood affluence.

Why do we want to artificially "level" our society? Certainly everyone should be given a chance to succeed, but leveling tends to blunt the sharp edges and lower the common denominator, not raise the bar for everyone.

Ads on Pandora.com

I was listening tonight at about 1am to Pandora.com (not iphone) and heard an advertisement that came on before a song.

Thanks RIAA this is why eventually they will drive themselves into the ground. Both the RIAA and the record companys have done more damage to the record industry.

They make people want to pirate music more than before. And all because they are greedy bastards. Thanks to Pandora I have purchased more music on itunes and Amazon. I'll be honest I use to use Limewire for most of my music downloads. Pandora made it so easy, it was a way to listen to new music and try out before you buy. Plus i got Correct ID3 tags and Album work. So i stoped the illegal download and payed for the music.

But now they do this to Pandora, so screw it, i guess its back to the old ways.

indeed i miss the old Napster :(

This soooo sucks. I've listened to Pandora for years and have discovered so much new music that I would never have bought without Pandora.

How short sighted are record companies that they can't realize terrestial radio sucks and online radio is helping drive sales?

Poor Tim Westergren. What a brilliant project he created - Music Genome Project - that turned into Pandora.

Man I love Pandora, I've listened since early 2006.

The only good radio in my town is the sports radio station ~

This is really bad news for musicians/ un-signed bands. Some friends of mine here in NYC that comprise a band called Redux tell me that a good 40-50% of all their songs/records/mp3's, etc. sold are purchased by people who first heard them on Pandora.

This is the ultimate exposure tool for independent bands/music, and it would be a really sad day for musicians and music lovers everywhere if it shuts down.

I used to work for Sony/BMG, and after my tenure there, I now have no problem at all stealing music owned by the big three labels. I've been to their board meetings...they are blood suckers, make no mistake about that...and they are scared. Fight or flight, you know?

I used to broadcast on live365.com and I had to stop last year due to this issue. It really sucks because I loved doing it but the rising royalty rates made it impossible. It sucks for companies like them and Pandora that they have to be affected because of this. It really is a joke.

I hope not,

Pandora is the best

I doubt theyll shut down....but there will be ads, we can live
