I keep hearing all this great talk about Pandora, but I don't get it. There are lot of other music apps, like AOL Radio, that to me seems just as good. So what is all this hoopla over Pandora?

Use it and maybe you'll find out.

I listen to it a lot. For me, it offers a good selection of music.

If you don't like it there are other apps. To each his own

I have and still don't see much of a difference that makes it better than other similar apps.

There need not always be logic to why something is popular...

I prefer Grooveshark as an alternative, but it is not available from the App Store.

Still, Pandora operates quite smoothly on the iPhone, and they were quick to update their app for 4.0.

My point is everyone says how great Pandora is, when I just don't see it. Yea internet radio is cool but Pandora isn't the only internet radio app out there. They all pretty much do the same thing. There is nothing special about Pandora that makes it stand out above the rest, at least that I can tell.

All I was trying to do is find out is why Pandora is so popular.

The reason why people love Pandora so much is because unlike traditional radio, Pandora is personalized radio; that is, you tell it what you like or what your preference is and it builds a playlist of songs that fit that particular request. Traditional radio is built around one genre and plays a plethora of music that fits that genre. Think of Pandora as a radio station that was made specifically for you that virtually plays only songs that you would like with a little bit of interaction.

Of course, if its not for you, there are more apps to chose from. You don't have to like or force yourself to like it just because it's a fad.

The reason everyone likes Pandora is because after using it for a while and rating the songs it plays, it pretty much only plays songs you like. Even if you have never heard the song before in your life, you will probably like what it plays. While there are a couple other apps that do this same thing, AOL Radio definitely does not do this.

Yup. AOL Radio is just a streaming radio service. It plays whatever they want to play. Pandora plays what you want it to play.

Shocked the OP didn't grasp this concept as it's pretty darn obvious.

I guess it's not for everyone. If you don't like it, use something else.

To be honest, I've had pandora since it was first released and used it maybe 5 times. I never liked the idea of only being able to be in pandora and nothing else, of course this limitation was from apple but still.

Now that it can run in the background (I am typing this on my iPhone and listening to pandora) I like it a lot. I've been using it all day, I like the customization.

For instance, for a band I can type in "Pantera" then it'll play songs that close resembles. I can also do thumbs up and thumbs down.

    Slayer - thumbs up
    Megadeth - thumbs up
Alice in chains - thumbs up
    Rob zombie - thumbs up
Rage against the machine - thumbs down
Metallica - neither, leave it as is

    Etc etc......
