This is quite simply a great idea. The market will probably be mostly people who have data sources they can connect to and that may be fine for Panic. An additional $9.99 for the 16:9 screen is a little steep after paying that to buy the app. Since non-16:9 Airplay is coming soon I'm not going to complain that they are charging for 16:9.

I´ve read it, and if the in-app where all about just reformatting the layout to fit 16:9 its totaly ok . but when I try to connect my HDMI cable to the iPad for TV out I get no picture in the app unless I´ve made the in app purchase ..
That to me is limeting the build in TV Out functionality exactly the same as music developers limiting midi out .. both violating the guidelines .. both leading to rejection from the store ..
The 16:9 reformating is pure genius because that could inspire music makers to add midi support in there app but limit the midi signal maybe to only play 1 note or something like that unless you do in app ...
but either the tv out is an in app bug thing or they are violating the guidelines .

Didn't Apple kick a bunch of these "wallpaper/clock/newsy" apps out of the app store when the iPad first came out? Here is the article from the reg a few years ago - apps that have their own desktop and has widgets were being banned from the Apple store, but Panic comes along and does this and its ok.
Those are the actual screenshots from the App..
Its probably the same code that runs their Big Board.
hmm good point SO. I think that this app is definitely straddling the line of a desktopish app with the Twitter integration and the calendar stuff.
However the custom data sources probably puts it more inline with a KPI then a "alternate desktop". If you are going to use this app to its fullest extent, one would probably lose the Twitter feed and other elements in place of the custom data source views.
But in its vanilla form it does look almost like another desktop imho...
I agree, perhaps the article should have touched on that just a smidgen.

It is not "cheap", you guys see 10 bucks and of course is nothing but for an app like this thats too much ! Most apple apps dont cost that much fwiw and thats something considering all the products are overpriced.

Please learn the difference between your personal opinion and facts. You don't have to pay $10 for the app, its only if you want to use it beyond just a giant widget, like at a business/school or something. Not every product ever is meant for *you* for pete's sake.
Apple apps aren't that much? What are you talking about? You mean iPhoto? Apple can charge whatever it wants, and so can Panic.
And what other products are "overpriced" exactly? Compared to stores that sell Apple products, oh wait Apple makes and sells its own products so how can they be overpriced?

if i could have OSX without much hassle i would have jump ship looong time ago.Software wise Apple have good prices, iwork on ios is a good example.
fwiw i love panic offerings, enjoy using prompt on ios and transmit + coda on mac.

We're moving office and literally just finished making almost the exact same thing, but web-based, to run on big TV screens in the new place.
This app smashes ours, except we were able to implement our branding in our custom solution... if they added the ability to change fonts, colours etc. I think I'd be all over this!

As a developer, I'd like to assure you that it's very difficult to "accidentally release" something to the app store.
There's quite a lot of steps you'd have to "accidentally" go through.
Accidentally doesn't automatically mean whoops, I clicked the wrong button. It could mean that an employee thought he was suppose to release it when he wasn't. Still an accident.

Actually, it's not overpriced if people buy it at the given price and Apple meets its sales targets. Since you can only get OSX from Apple you have to decide if it is worth it at Apple's price point. If you buy it; it's not overpriced even though you would have liked to pay less. Apple charges what the market will bear, as well it should.
