Question on OS installs. In the Windows world it’s usually a good idea when upgrading to the next OS to format and start the install from a clean slate.
What is the best method for OSX? Do most just people upgrade or blow everything away?

Heh I haven't even gotten a Mac yet and I'm already wondering what's going to show up after Panther. 😀

I think most people on MacRumors will do a clean install so they start off the new OS in tip top condition. Additionally, I think that some of us find it sadistically fun to reinstall all of our software and reload all our music and pictures. I don't know, maybe its just me.

God I am weird.....🙂

Why have some people voted this as negative news?

The Mac OS is great in that it works very well installing the new OS over top. I know I used Archive and Install for 10.2 install and it worked perfectly 🙂

I'll be installing panther over the top of jaguar. I trust it to install correctly and be optimised. It's never let me down before 🙂

I don't have time to reinstall things.

Just be sure to ONLY do this with the final release version of Panther. The Preview release's readme says you can't install the final release on top of it.

Panther makes a LOT of changes involving OpenGL (including the 2d on Quartz Extreme thing that no one will talk about), so it makes sense that it may not be so great right now. Wait and see, and whine about it if the final version still sucks.

several things fixed!

Greetings All!

Several things fixed for me with this build..

1. With the last couple of builds I had to disable Bluetooth to keep the Address Book from crashing. That problem has been fixed.

2. iSync is working again. Note: When I did the 7B39 install I was watching everything very carefully. I noticed that the iSync installation logged some errors during the main install. So after the main install completed I plugged back in the #2 install disk, browsed around and found the iSync installation, then ran it again.

3. iTunes no longer crashes when I plug in an iPod.

4. With the last build (7B28), Mail.app would crash sometimes when I would reply to an email. So far that hasn't happened.

So things do seem to be improving!

I must be sadistic also, because it is sort of fun to do that. I plan on transferring all my files onto my firewire drive, then erase my hard drives, clean install the os and all apps, then stick my files back on. Of course I get some benefits from this as I'll be using the system on a faster HD then, but setting up prefs again won't be fun. But all the strange junk that has creeped on will be gone. Then I'll make a disk image of the newly installed drive for future reference. Doesn't that sound painfully fun?

I'm a great believer in full reinstalls. It forces your to have the discipline to keep the things you want on a fileserver that gets backed up.

As things stand today, I can completely blow away any of my 4 macs, install from scratch, and be back to full speed in a few hours.

This brings me incredible piece of mind - a drive crashes? No problem. A machine blows up? No problem.

I have a cluster of Linux servers, all with their data on RAID arrays, all backed up nightly via a robotic tape drive. That's the only way to true piece of mind.

Doing a 'archive' install or perhaps a full 'clean' install is probably the best way to update. 'Archive' installs save most settings and docs, and don't reformat the HD.
P.S. I've had experience with Windows machines, and though I've had to completely reinstall some😡 I haven't had to do much reformatting.

one thing i am wondering is this.

Is apple making the developers download and install each new build, or are they offering the updates through the software update?

They have to download all 4 cd's then install. It was a pretty painful process the first time I did it, but it's getting easier.

I've heard bad things about upgrading, but I doubt you have to reinstall. With OS X v10.2 anyway you can do a 'clean install' which can store your prefs, files, etc. away, reinstall, and move most of 'em back.

Hi

sounds good but how does that work ?

When I original setup my iBook I just had one disk with all the apps e.g. iLife on it.

What do you think is the upgrade price from 10.2 ?

Not just you...I wouldn't say I do it for fun, instead of a friday night out, but whenever I get a new build or feel clogged up out the CD's come.

Some people don't like the fact that NDA stuff has been leaked to the "outside world", which is fair enough.

iSync Fixed?

Does this seed fix iSync? Everytime I try to use it, I am told that this is an expired version of iSync and that I need to download a new one... And I am using the one which came WITH the seed, version 1.2.

It probably puts them into a disk image (file that pretends to be a disk), or moves them to another spot on the HD. Then, after installing, it moves them back.
P.S. In response to the Panther upgrade price question, apparently it's going to cost a full $129. 🙁
Edit: Fixed spelling problem.
