Dear nre999,

Please let me know, what link does not work?

Dear CLuv,

Frankly speaking, we wanted to know the contents of your system directories when the driver was uninstalled.

In any case, thanks for this information. The system directories' contents is ok and we need some additional information from you.

As you know the startup is, in general, a sequence of the grey and then the blue screen. So, please let us know what screen goes slowly.

Moreover, we need your startup log information.
Please go to the Terminal application and execute "sudo echo > /var/log/system.log", then restart you Mac and send us the "/var/log/system.log" file or its contents.

Looking forward to seeing your reply.
Thanks,
Anatoly.

Anatoly,

To help you out, would you like for me to uninstall and get that information from the terminal.app again?

In regards to the screens, the grey screen is the one that is on for the longest amount of time. I usually see, before install of your software, the grey screen for about a second to max 5. If I ever see the circle, the max number of revolutions was 1.5 to 2. Now, I see the grey screen with the apple logo for about 15 seconds, then the circle will do generally 13 to 15 revolutions after that.

In regards to the command for the system.log, I get the response permission denied. I will restart and see what happens.

Restarted, get the same message Permission denied when I key in the command sudo echo > /var/log/system.log

I tried a variant to that command sudo echo /var/log/system.log and Terminal asks for my password, and after entering it I just get /var/log/system.log

Am I missing something? Please forgive me, I'm still somewhat new to the use of Terminal.

Dear CLuv,

First, please send us your log information when the driver is installed.

Please go to the terminal application and execute:
1. "sudo –s";
2. enter your root password;
3. "echo > /var/log/system.log";
4. restart your Mac;
5. go to terminal;
6. "cp /var/log/system.log Desktop/";
7. provide us with the system.log file.

Thank you in advance,
Anatoly.

Dear nre999,

After you fill out the web form and press the "Send" button you will be able to download the beta version. I have just checked it. Please try again.

Dear CLuv,

According to our log information you have some errors that are not related to our driver, but in any case we will try to solve this problem.

Thank you for your help, it is truly appreciated. I don't know if you can explain why the slower startup appeared after the installation of NTFS for Mac. I did notice it's not as long of a startup after that command function, but still not as fast. Oh well, I'm guessing that will clear up after an install of Leopard next month. Will this program be or is it already Leopard ready?

Dear CLuv,

According to our last log, you use MozyBackup software that reports some errors. Please try to disable this backup software and check your startup time.

This beta version is not compatible with Leopard, but we will do our best to release this product with Leopard support.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Best regards,
Anatoly.

It seems that your Airport is not starting on start up, which is why Mozy is
reporting an error.
I didnt look at all of your posts but have you tried a clean reinstall of OS X?
The only thing I can suggest if that doesnt work is to run hardware diagnostics.
Im not sure that the software from paragon is the problem, though until you
try out what I suggested it cant be eliminated.

Anatoly,

Thanks for you and your company's help. I removed Mozy, since I was unable to find an option to disable. After removal the startup was the same, and after running OnyX the startup was the same. I will test some more. I appreciate your time and help. I also understand you're a company, and you can't spend all your time on this issue that has cropped up. I will not be offended if your suggestions/support has to end. After all it could be just shear coincidence.

RoadieJoadie,

Thanks for reviewing the system.log also. Is there a way to get the Airport Utility to start at startup? I have the Airport Disk Utility in the menu bar at the top. It might help to know I have a External Drive and a Printer connected to my AEBS. I have not tried a clean install yet. I figured I would do that when I upgrade to leopard. I'll run OnyX again, and run a hardware diagnostic.

I appreciate everyone's help, and this is helping me learn more about how to use my 1st Mac.

on imac alu 24"

I just got my new iMac last week, it is 24" 2.4ghz 1gb ram 320gb HD, and am glad to try out your software. I am able to write to the boot camp partition (ntfs), but when I boot to windows, the files I wrote to it do not appear. The weird part is that the folder that they are in and that was created in os x is there, but the files are not. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks for this very useful program.

prefpane startvolume selection

Anatoly, after installing the driver the Bootcamp volume item is missing in the corresponding preference pane.
I dont know if anybody can reproduce this...
My configuration is an iMac 24" (late 2006) with 10.4.10 installed.
For my configuration this is reproducible, after removal of the driver the Bootcamp volume item reapears.

Dear CLuv,

I would like us to solve your cropping up issue. Please try to uninstall our driver and then send us your output of the following commands in the Terminal application:
1. ls -lR /System/Library/Extensions/ntfs.kext/
2. ls -lR /System/Library/Filesystems/ntfs.fs
3. ls -l /sbin/mount_ntfs

Dear phampton81,

Thank you for your very important feedback.
Please let us know, what exactly files did you write to the NTFS partition (size, extensions) and where did you write them (locations). Can you see these files under Mac?

Dear ScienceMac,

Your feedback is very important for us too. We just are trying to prepare a similar environment to reproduce the problem. Meanwhile, please let us know your NTFS volume label and volume size?

Thank you all in advance,
Anatoly.

Problem with QT .mov files on NTFS

My system (10.4.10) is a MacPro with three internal HDDs, one Bootcamp - formatted NTFS.

I accessed a directory on the Bootcamp drive with several .mov, .avi, and still image files. It was taking a long time (maybe 20 seconds of the magical rainbow pinwheel of fruity fun) before showing the files in the directory. I thought it might have something to do with the fact that there was probably 30 GB of data in it.

I tried to play two Quicktime files (both 30 second commercials in DVCAM - so, approximately 115 MB). They also took a long time before being ready to play and then would not play all the way through. They stuttered and then stopped after a few seconds, and I had to force quit the QT player.

I uninstalled ntfs-mac, rebooted and repeated my steps. All of the files in the directory showed up in the finder window almost immediately. When I tried to open the first QT file, I got an error message saying it was not a valid file. The other one I had initially tried gave the same error. File properties of each file reports that they are now "zero bytes" in size. Another QT file in the directory--one that I had not previously tried to play--opened immediately and played without an issue.

I was not able to repro on my MBP, but it obviously doesn't have Bootcamp on a separate internal drive.

Anatoly,

I went ahead and did an Archive and Install of OS X this past weekend to take care of the issues. I have not uninstalled your driver. Startup is better after the the Archive and Install, not exactly the same but better and acceptable. I did some research this past weekend, and noticed that some people had issues with their startup after removing Parallels. I never noticed anything, but maybe after the install of the Paragon software it helped exposed what others that formerly had Parallels experienced. I tried the methods I found, but no luck so I went with the Archive and Install that appeared others went ahead and performed to resolve startup issues.
Would you still like me to uninstall and reinstall and provide results? Again, than you for your help.

Slow Startup also appears on my MBP17".
Could it be that the driver conflicts in some way with Parallels?
(In my case Version 2)
Also, when looking in my system.log it shows:
Code:
Sep 17 19:34:27 Fmac automount[235]: Failed request for Finder notification; result = -1.
just before the system idles for about 30 seconds...
Maybe there is something wrong the the automount process? Is it even used by your software?
The NTFS volume is not showing up in the StartUp Disk Preference Pane.
Disk Utility is showing "0 Files, 0 Folders".
Disk information:
NTFS:
Kapazität: 25.73 GB
Verfügbar: 15.31 GB
Beschreibbar: Ja
Dateisystem: NTFS
BSD-Name: disk0s3
Mount-Point: /Volumes/NTFS

Anatoly,
The BootCamp volume (NTFS) is labeled "Windows HD" the volume has 232,44 GB.
As consequence, BootCamp is only accessible during bootup by pressing the "option" key.
As fwhh has hypothesized I also suspect some interference with Parallels Desktop, I think that Parallels has included FUSE technology with the latest builds. Further I have really slow file access on my BootCamp folders using Parallels and having the Paragon driver installed. File access wasnt that fast previously (without the Paragon driver) but now I have lags of approximately 3 minutes on some folders (through Parallels). In this particular case, the lags happen with a folder containing approximately 600 images (and 586 MB) and rendering the virtualized environment nonresponsive. I have Parallels Build 4560 (evaluation).

Copying (under Mac OS X, no active Parallels environment) actually gives an error while accessing the image folder. The message is as follows (translated from german):

"You cannot copy '2006-04-22 - Tokyo - 008.JPG' to the destination, as another object with the same name already exists, which only differs in uppercase/lowercase writing".

The error is reproducible only for this file other files in that folder with the same length/ same naming scheme are no problem - I cannot verify this, might it be due to something like 'alternate datastream' or other specialties of NTFS?

Write and read speed are very good through your driver :), it is nearly or as good as copying from Apple HFS (tested by copying 200GB of mixed data).

I noticed quite poor performance when copying a lot of small files (ca. 20000 files with a total of 2GB) from an external (firewire) hdd with NTFS to a local HFS+ volume... i.e. copying a windows xp user folder. Can anyone else confirm this? The disk was defragmented just before testing.

And: When bringing up the info dialogue (CMD+i) the "More Information" field stays at the spinning wheel...(saying: Loading...)

I can confirm this finding, I have experienced the same.

In addition, after I wrote my findings with the non-copyable image file. I tried to delete the image file and restore it with a backup. This was unsuccessful. I tried deleting the whole folder - when trying to empty the trash, some objects could not be removed.
I restarted in Bootcamp and checkdisk appeared and found some bad indices.
Finally I decided to merge the Bootcamp partition with the Mac OS partition and restored my files from a backup.

Overall, I really hope that the driver becomes stable, as FUSE is no option for me and I really love to use Bootcamp with NTFS (rendering of tomographic images wich exceed the limitations of FAT32).

Can't run VMware Fusion VM from external USB NTFS HD

First what I'm trying to do is probably way more than your current design goals.

I am running an early iMac86 17" with 1.5 G memory and have no issue running VMware Fusion VMs on either apple formated USB or 1394 external drives. Trying to run the Vmware VM started out fine. Right before the actual Win2k screen appeared my Mac froze up solid.

I'll download and run this when I get my iMac w/ VMware and such.

I do need to try a Parallels VM and I need to see if I get the same issue on my MacBook Core2Duo.

Strange, this time I started out with a Free-Dos VM it worked. Win-98 VN worked as did React OS 3.3VM. I tried a different Win2k VM, it worked as did WinXP. Parrallels Dos-6.22 worked. Did my VM get corrupted in moving it to the NTFS disk? Was something else running that caused a problem?

Dear Forum Visitors,

Thank you all for your essential feedback. We are going to re-upload a new version of the driver next week with some bug fixes. We will try to investigate the issue with "Parallels" and let you know our result.

Thank you all again and have a nice weekend,
Anatoly.
