I may find the need for parallels (or vmware) later down the road as I actually start to use it more...question is, when I install it, do I need to reinstall any applications I currently installed on my windows bootcamp? Thanks!
No - Parallels will migrate a bootcamp partition, as will Fusion if I remember correctly. The challenge is many MS apps think you've done a new install and will need to reactivate them.

Let me know if you have any questions about Parallels!

I did find an Office 2003 version and installed it on my windows (via bootcamp currently). I had to fiddle a little more (download a key remapping thing), but I'm very happy with the way I can move around in Excel (very much/exactly like my windows Excel at work).

Hey kbun! I'm with Parallels Customer Support. When you're ready to make the switch feel free to hit me up with any Q's you may have! Best of luck with everything! :)

Parallels

Thanks again. It looks like I'll go for parallels.

Any thoughts as to Parallels vs. Vmware for someone of my needs?

Thanks!

Have a Mac Mini I bought 3 years ago, never upgraded to snow leopard, installed Parallels 3, an early version, and every time I got an upgrade from Apple for OSX installed it slowed down Parallels. Upgraded several times to new releases of Parallels and again, every time Apple gave me an OSX upgrade Parallels performance disintegrated. Finally it got so bad it took 4 minutes to boot XP and about 5 minutes to start up Quickbooks - became totally unusable. Parallels support people kept trying to help me and kept going over the same solutions I tried before, from different people who did not seem to communicate with each other. Didn't have the hundreds of hours of time it would take to work with all these people so I just got an old XP laptop going again. Today I got my new Macbook Pro and will try Fusion.

Thanks for the comments..I'd be interested to see how Fusion goes for you.

I've been trying in vain to find the drivers for bootcamp in Windows (i.e. I think there are drivers I can install in Windows so some things work - i.e. the brightness adjustment for the screen doesn't work)...

I called Apple support and they didn't seem to be able to do it, also called local retail where I live. I borrowed a friend's MacBook Air Reinstall Drive (Mac OS X V10.6) but it doesn't seem to work..assume it's different? Anyone know where I can find the drivers? (did extensive googling)

Thanks.

They are on the OS X snow leopard DVD that came with your mac, it's written black on white in the bootcamp instructions.

Ah, that's the issue. I lost/cannot find my CD that came with my Mac.

We've come a long way!

Hey driedsquid,

We've come a long way since version 3 in more ways than one. Version 6 is definitely our best ever, and will continue to get better! If you ever decide to try us again let me know and I'd love to help you out.

I am in the process of changing to Apple. what i need primarily is Parallels in order to use Quickbooks. I understand from browsing forums--- that i need to answer the assorted questions during the install process correctly or a certain way. so I need to know what the proper responses should be. so the install will go smooth. i have not received my new Imac yet it should be here soon.I have bought Windows 7 to install once I have Parallels installed

so just how do I contact --ParallelsCS

As promised, I wanted to post on how my installation went/feedback so far. So I just installed Windows on bootcamp (figured I'll install Parallels or Fusion later if needed, but want to see how this goes first).

First of all, easier said then done. I had to troubleshoot..including having to delete some files (by downloading iDefrag demo, because I'm cheap and would prefer not to buy the full version unless needed) so there was enough free space.

I had to decide how much space to allocate to Windows..which involved more googling to the uninitiated me. I finally allocated 70GB (out of 250GB originally) to Windows, since I don't plan to use windows for anything other than Microsoft office and perhaps only simple utilities..yet I didn't want to worry too much about lacking space.

Remember to format the drive so it's NTFS partition.

Gee, this sounds a lot tougher than I thought it might be. :(

I tried parallels and always had some problems. Switching between VM or keyboard responsivess. It just never worked properly. VMWare Fusion is much more stable. It might not be as good in 3D but if I game I startup native Win7.
I think just for work VMware fusion is the most stable and trouble free of the 3 major VMs.

Excel in Boot Camp

kbun, you said that you've got Windows Excel working great on your Mac. My issue is the same as yours - too painful to use Excel for Mac given diff shortcuts. When you're trying to work efficiently do you use your MBP keyboard or have you tried to plug in an external (windows) keyboard? I'd probably do the latter and want to see if it's practical.

Hi Kbun - I know it's been 2 years since your post below but I'm hoping somehow you'll see this. I am exactly where you were 2 years ago. I'm a 24 year veteran of using a PC and outlook but for Excel I learned every shortcut as an analyst in Office 2003 and I've switched to 2010 for a PC and I can't pick up my pace PLUS now I've gone to a Mac and honestly I am on the verge of a meltdown b/c my speed is being crushed. I hoped buying Outlook for the Mac would be o.k. but it's absolutely pathetic for an advanced user. I've just been told about parallels and it sounds like it might be the trick for me. Boy do I wish I could use Excel 2003 with it but it's 2 years later than when you did it and probably too hard to do. WHY would they change all the shortcuts? I am so furious with MSFT but APPL can't help me b/c it's too simplistic. I need my contacts in Outlook and Excel in windows version. I'm just wondering how you've managed these past 2 years. Did you ever load parallel?
