is there any way to set up parallels on my mbp but run it from an external harddrive? Thanks for any info.

I think that you can do this if you have OS X installed and running on the external.

Yes, you can do this. I am doing it now with no problems. I have Parallels installed on an external USB drive.

do you have to have it on the same partition as a bootable osx? or can i just instal parallels on the external alone with windows and run it like that?
