Horrible buggy app, funny how it’s always faster and saves more memory. BS
Just installed 14 in Mojave Beta. I can't believe my eyes. I was ready to lose Parallels because it was so slow but with this update Windows now runs as fast as the MacOS. It is amazing. Apps open in a fraction of the time, things just snap. Quite impressed.

If you want something free, there's Oracle VirtualBox - which lacks the polish, graphical performance and Windows/MacOS integration, but is otherwise pretty solid.

I’d also point to Parallels Desktop Lite:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/parallels-desktop-lite/id1085114709?mt=12

It’s a version of Parallels that does not use its own kernel extensions but Apple’s native virtualization framework. It’s actually pretty impressive Parallels, software known for being very invasive in its integration with the host OS, has a version compliant with Apple’s App Store sandboxing rules. I vastly prefer it that way, even though it’s not quite as fast and doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles of the “full” version.

It’s a $60 a year subscription, BUT only if you run Windows. For running non-Windows OSes it’s completely free and I use to it run macOS and Linux (in my experience, it runs them much better than VirtualBox, which doesn’t even have guest additions for these systems, so it’s a hassle).

And for running Windows, I use VirtualBox which more than suffices for my needs. Using Parallels Lite in conjunction with VirtualBox is completely free, and I can keep the guest OSes pretty much separated from my main OS and use them only when I need them (only occasionally, which is another reason I wouldn’t be that comfortable with paying).

That's what I expected, obviously. But without a sincere mea culpa they have lost me as a customer. Like I said, I will make the jump to Fusion as soon as PD13 stops working for me, so with Mojave I expect.
Parallels Desktop 13 should run without issue on Mojave as for me prior to upgrading Parallels Desktop 12 was running just fine on High Sierra.

I just noticed this as well. Even the simple boot and shutdown of the Windows VM's is pretty quick. Overall I am pleased with the update as it feels like they worked on the core performance alot.

For those looking at Parallels or Fusion, I have used both (not the 2018 preview of Fusion) and while I like the VMware integration of Fusion, Parallels has always performed better. When I would transfer network files or download items from the Internet the bandwidth of Fusion was always very poor. I tired this on 2 machines and same results. Additionally, my Magic Trackpad would disconnect and reconnect from the host machine for some reason with Fusion. When using Parallels the Windows VM's would perform very well. Network bandwidth was always full speed and overall it was a smoother experience. Just my .02 ;)

Parallels can work out to be expensive unless you have an active subscription where the upgrade is free. Just installed the free upgrade and I can report Parallels Desktop 14 runs as smooth as silk on macOS High Sierra.

Although VirtualBox is good there is no other virtualisation software that can touch Parallels. I have been using it since release 7.
Since the upgrade cost is $49.99 and the annual subscription is $49.99, can you just cancel as soon as the new release comes out? Otherwise, I don't see the reason to subscribe. I like being on the latest release, but I'm not sure that the v14 looks like it's materially better. Can you enlighten me?

Nothing that is gonna convince me to stop using the VirtualBox and pay for this instead.

Those want you to pay for their software, first need to take a look if there are already similar free software out there.

And if there is, you need to convince the customers WHY should they give you money, instead of just asking for it.

For example, if I made a text editor for programmers, and decided to charge for it, I better give potential customers a good reason to why should they choose my text editor over the Atom or VS Code.

I am on parallels 12 and have noticed it being almost uselessly laggy and slow as of lately. Was literally just wondering earlier today if I should upgrade... then I cross this. After reading this should I FEEL like this company would deliberately muck up old versions to make me consider upgrading in my mind lol

Started on Parallels and then switched when Fusion came out and haven't looked back. Just so much more compatible with those that work in the VM world, not just on Mac.

Same here. I also have to connect to a lot of weird devices via USB and Parallels didn’t behave all the time. I also love that I can develop a VM on my Mac and move it to my ESXi server or Windows Workstation.

FWIW!i have never HAD to upgrade when a new version of OSX comes out, though I generally do eventually.

To answer you question in detail I will begin with the specifications of my Mac

mid 2011 21.5" iMac
2.7 GHz Intel Quad Core i5 (Sandy Bridge) CPU
8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB Graphics
1 TB Seagate Hybrid Drive
macOS High Sierra
https://everymac.com/systems/apple/...inch-aluminum-mid-2011-thunderbolt-specs.html

I am running Windows 10 on Parallels Desktop 14 having just installed the free upgrade from Parallels Desktop 13 and performance has been enhanced further following applying the upgrade with the following allocated to the Windows 10 virtual environment

2 CPU's
4 GB RAM
512 MB Graphics
80 GB Hard Drive

For me at least the performance of Parallels Desktop is smooth and seamless. I run Windows 10 in Coherence mode and the experience is seamless with all of the files on my iMac being fully accessible.

I have found performance and responsiveness of the Windows 10 virtual environment on Parallels Desktop almost equal to that of a physical installation under general use. Although all 512 MB of the Graphics from the host iMac have been assigned to the virtual environment the performance does not seem to have been affected on the host machine.

VMWare Fusion has been tried on several occasions with identical resources allocated and I have found performance to be significantly slower on my mid 2011 iMac. I cannot comment as to whether the same would apply to other Mac Hardware.

VirtualBox is great and performance is exemplary although the level of integration with macOS that Parallels Desktop provides is not present.

I do have VirtualBox installed for running Linux distributions for which it is ideal.

It's still well-updated, with version 10.1 released December 2017. It has seen a few minor updates since. I hadn't heard about it being discontinued though. Do you have a source?

EDIT:

Guess that's that then. :p

They had apparently fired large part of the team which led people to believe that if there is no one there to develop than they won’t..

Why don't you just make it? Copy the Windows logo, Command-I the application, click the icon and paste. Custom icon.
Yes, thank you. However, I’d need access to the icon first in order to be able to copy/paste it. At this point isn’t even showing when I run Windows.

I've had Parallels 12 running on Mojave and not really noticed any lagging. I'd decided when 13 came out that I was going to get off the annual update/subscription bandwagon. I've now completely uninstalled Parallels from my MacBook and my iMac. Installed VirtualBox and my Windows VMs are working just fine for me.

  • Right click the image below and select 'Copy image'.
  • Right click the application you want to apply the icon to and select 'Get info'
  • Click the app icon in the upper left corner to highlight it.
  • Press Command-P to paste.

That's it. It's been like that since OS 7.

Education pricing is $39, and not an upgrades so you can still run an earlier version on another Mac if you want. Any student or teacher qualifies; as well as anyone with an academic email from what I can see.

Even though I already knew about that, it still amazes me how someone at Apple actually thought to make something like that work. It's little things like this that make macOS so great. No other OS comes close.

And it's been around for years. I remember making all kinds of custom icons as a kid. There use to even be all kinds of photos made by using a bunch of custom icons next to each other. Thought it was so cool when I was a kid.

Parallels suck. Overpriced for offering only partial Windows support.
I made the mistake of paying but 2 weeks after I canceled the renewal. I need to use mainly Linux and secondary Windows on VMs.

Their support is horrible and man they are pricey. I moved to VirtualBox since it's free, it gets updated more often and I don't use any graphic acceleration applications. They weren't capable to update their Parallels Tools installer for the latest kernel versions of Linux.

Maybe there are features others consider worth paying for but.... not me... fooled me once and its enough.

I just run the old boot camp and get all the functionality.

Can move to external drive if really need something from both systems....just easier for me.

Yeah I know it works that way, I’ve been using Macs my entire life. Anyway it’s pretty simple: I’m looking for the Windows 10 icon the Parallels developers made, which must be somewhere in the app’s package contents. The version they made is more macOS-like and fits in better than the original style which is fully flat. Long story short: What you’re offering I already know how to get. I’m not looking for that. Thanks though.

Really torn here. I’m on 11, so it’s time to do something. The Parallels model bothers me, and I do have 2 laptops. At the same time, I need to use Windows quite often. Sigh...

For all the smart people on this thread - If I wanted to take a few disk images I have of previous iterations of my Mac OS X (High Sierra) and make them into separate virtual machines, what software would you use? I had seen that Parallel's Lite allows you to do this for free. But what do you all think?

Did you try VirtualBox? It's free.
Very briefly, although never really gave it a huge shot. Others’ comments in this thread and elsewhere have had me worried about performance, and that’s enough of a frustration as it is.
