Partial Backup

I purchased a WD My Passport external storage device and completed my first full backup a few weeks back. Since then I have more new photos on my mac as well as some software updates and would like do just back these up as thats all that has changed. Will time machine do this automatically once connected or do I need to select this option within time machine so a full backup is not complete again. First one of course took quite a while. Thanks for any help on this.

It's automatic. In fact you should leave the drive plugged in whenever possible. Time Machine will automatically make incremental backups hourly.
