I'm about to install Windows 8.1 on my MBP 500 GB SSD and I need to choose a partition size. I mainly need Windows for my programming courses so I'll be installing Visual Studio 2013 and SQL Server 2012.

I checked the system requirements for each and I'll need a minimum of 20 GB for Windows, 10 GB for Visual Studio and 6 GB for SQL Server.

I might also be installing Steam (1 GB) with the occasional game that won't run on Mac.

That would be roughly 40 GB of software. So considering these apps might end up taking more space than the minimum requirement, do you think 50 GB would be enough for the partition size? Thanks!

60 GB is the absolute bare minimum I would recommend, but in your case, I would do at least 120. It's generally not a good idea to fill an SSD to 85% or more of its capacity. You want to leave a bit of breathing room for it and to install operating system and software updates.

Thanks for the help. I doubled my initial idea to 100 GB. However, I am having some issues so if you could help, I would really appreciate it:
