Partition taking up 50GB of space

Hey guys,

I recently tried to create a 50GB partition, but my power went out half way through, causing my iMac to restart. 50GB of space is gone from my computer now, but I don't see any partition in the Finder or Disk Utility. Can anyone help me find and delete this partition?

I do not think that any partition could delete this way. May be it went in unmounted state. Try disk utility to see that partition.

1.Open Disk Utility
(See the drive partition present in the left side.)
2. Note is there any blurr partition?
If if its that partition at which you was working.
3. Just select it and press "Mount" in the top menu of disk utility.

There could be a case that when you tried to mount it it will show verification error try to verify using "first aid" present in the disk utility. (Personally speaking I rely more on Stellar Volume Repair)
After "verify" it will repair your disk.

Most probably you will find that drive if still not use some strong third party tool.

Well, my computer never finished making the partition so there's nothing to physically delete, but the 50GB is still gone from my computer. And I just checked, there's no blurred out partition in Disk Utility's sidebar.

No 2nd partition shows up, at least not one that's 50GB.

It shows the Macintosh HD partition as being nearly 500GB. Interesting. Have you downloaded anything?

More seriously, hit Cmd + I on "Macintosh HD" and see if it says the space is being used or if it says the disk it 450GB.

I download things all the time, but I know for sure that I had 70GB free before creating this partition, and 20GB free after restarting my computer after the power outage.

Nothing seems out of place, I just can't find where this 50GB went.

Yup, I know that this is because of the 50GB partition that I tried to make and not anything. I backed up before I tried to partition it, maybe I should just do a reinstall of Snow Leopard and then migrate all my files back with Time Machine.

That is entirely strange. I wish I could give you a definitive answer. A reinstall should help.
 
The same thing happened to me. Restart your computer to the disk that came with your computer, open Disk Utility, and repair the disk. That'll most likely fix it.

Just curious, but does it have to be the disk that came with my computer? Or can it be the Snow Leopard disk. I think I lost my restore disks 🙄 I'll try it out tomorrow.
 
Really different situation for me, thanks chocolate632 for starting such a nice discussion. learned a lot here 😉 I am trying on Mac I will update if I found anything interesting expecting same from you guys, please update if anyone find the answer "where that 50 GB gone?"

This is the precise reason that nearly all computer manufacturers (especially the high end mfgs like Apple) went to recovery partitions on the hard drive. Then disks are not needed.

Why Apple got cheap (or stubborn) and failed to do so, is baffling.

I know there will be plenty of excuses and "reasons why not" challenging my post, but in the final analysis, restore petitions are very handy.

The good news is finally Apple woke up and are about to employ them across all machines. Or at least that's "the rumor".. 😀
