Partitioning external firewire drive

will partitioning erase everything on my drive?
I have an external with about 111gigs left (150gb total)
and I need to try to recover some files from my old mac's
damaged drive.

So again, when I partition the ext drive will it
erase the whole contents of that drive???

if yo use disk utility in Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier it will. Leopard's disk utility and iPartition will do partitioning on the fly without reformatting.
