Hi, I am trying to partition my drive so I can see how Yosemite will work on a partition before updating to it. While trying to partition the drive, an error message appears (see image). I also have a bootcamp partition. Any help to fix this would be appreciated :)

Do you currently have a Recovery Partition? You can check by restarting and holding command-R. If you do, do not add another partition. You'll break Boot Camp.

I done what you said and don't see any recovery partition.

If you can boot into Recovery Mode, but not Internet Recovery, you have a recovery partition.

Have you tried booting in single-user mode?

-restart your mac by pressing cmd-s
-at the prompt, type fsck -fy

when the verication/repair is done, type exit to finish the booting sequence or type reboot to restart again.

Then try to partition your drive again.

    OP:

I would not recommend that you "try" Yosemite on a separate partition on a drive that has an earlier version of the OS on it.

If you want to give Yosemite a run-through, you should install it onto a SEPARATE "standalone" hard drive, and boot and test it that way first.

I could be wrong here (and others will correct me), but...
... if you do the install on a drive that already has another previous OS on it, Yosemite may start "mucking with the drive" in ways that you may not like...

Thanks for the replies. I decided to just leave the Yosemite install on a partition because as people say on here, it can mess up the drive/other partitions. I'll get an external hard drive and put it on that.

    Thanks again
