I took two flights on American Airlines this past weekend, and used Passbook for both of them. Check in, to my seat on the plane, I never had to show a paper boarding pass. This worked very well!

I really don't know how to make it work. I'm in the UK. If I tap the app, it takes me to the App Store section even after I've ready downloaded all the available apps. It doesn't group them in passbook at all.

This weekend I was able to use Passbook for the first time. Walked into my local Target store, which conveniently has a Starbucks inside. Received a notification on my lock screen that one of my "favorite" Starbucks was nearby, swiped to unlock and paid for my Grande White Chocolate Mocha :)

What is the impact on battery life when its always searching for your local store?

Yes, I've been successfully using it since the Walgreens app became Passbook compatible. It works very well.

I tried to use the Ticketmaster app for my Book of Mormon tickets, but the Pantages Theater doesn't have the right scanners. There are only a few Passbook compatible venues so far, but I'm sure it'll keep getting better.

You have to open each app and load the applicable part into Passbook. It doesn't do it automatically.

You'll only see passes in passbook if they've been generated by the app, so unless your hotel booking app actually has a booking, you won't see anything in passbook.

My wife has paid for her Starbucks drinks with the Starbucks app exclusively for about a year now.

She got it working with Passbook yesterday and it worked, but then she asked me "So what's the point?"

I wasn't really able to come up with an answer other than saying "Well, now you would tap this icon instead of that one."

Progress!

It feels a lot like Newsstand to me. Something that gathers certain things together when you already had the option to put those things in a folder yourself if you had wanted to.

One good thing is that it pops up as a swipeable alert when you're in a Starbucks, so you don't have to open the app, or do anything but hit the home or sleep button, and swipe for it to be ready to be scanned. I like that aspect. It's a little thing, but it pleases me.

Is this going to happen near every Starbucks? A constant reminder that she's near a Starbucks multiple times per day?

Ugh. This is going to be very bad for our monthly budget.

You select your favorite stores and it pops up when you are close. It doesn't do every Starbucks that you pass. Or at least it hasn't for me.

Exactly. You can add up to 10 "favorite" locations. The Passbook notification will pop up when you're near one of them. Doesn't pop up when you're near just any random store.

And while it's not a great improvement from the Starbucks app itself (since you don't need much more than that for Starbucks in the first place), things that have other important data like airline flights will make Passbook much more useful (pops up gate changes, delays, flight time, etc., all when you're at the airport or close to it).

It could also be leveraged to show sales and other items of interest when you're near a store for which you've added a Passbook pass. The merchants will of course have to produce the app and other technological aspects, but Apple does provide an easy API to make it all happen. And fortunately it's all opt-in, so you don't get bombarded with advertising you're not interested in.

I used it for Fandango tickets recently. Bought the tickets at home, went to the theater, the notification popped up on the lock screen, swiped over it and had my ticket scanned. Again, not that much "easier" than going to the Fandango app itself and fetching the ticket, but it does add some intelligence to the whole iOS ecosystem. And for that I have no objection.

i tried to add walgreens and cvs, neither barcode will scan. they said it has to be in bar-code format not the quickscan format.. how do you change it on pass source?

I will be honest, I was skeptical of this at first, and feared the worst. But after an entire day, it hasn't been to bad! For example, I'd typically run from 100% down to about 50% during an average day's use - with this location enabled in Passbook, same amount of usage, I am down to about 40%. These are averages, I'm typically on wifi most of the day at my job (aside from commute and a lunch commute), so YMMV.

If it were only one pass, I'd agree with your you and your wife. My wife had pretty much the same response LOL. But long term, as more apps become enabled, mobile coupons and tickets will become the norm. At that point, Passbook will become one of those things we can't imagine living without (so to speak).

I used Passbook for the first time today and here is something I noticed. I loaded some $ on my Starbucks App and added that balance to Passbook. I used Passbook to pay for my Starbucks purchase. My new balance was not reflected in Passbook.

In order to get Passbook to update with my new balance I had to go back to the Starbucks App. After clicking Manage ---> Add Card to Passbook my current balance was reflected in Passbook.

The balance is updated at 12:00AM everyday.

MLB: We Want To Stop Selling Printed Tickets, And Apple’s Passbook Is Helping Us Get There

"Passbook – which allows tickets and loyalty cards from a variety of outlets to be delivered to one iPhone app – proved to be an instant hit with fans, Bob Bowman, CEO of MLB Advance Media, tells MarketWatch. In its test run with four teams for the final two weeks of the season, 1,500 e-ticket buyers (12%) chose Passbook delivery. “That adoption rate really floored us – there is no question our fans want digital tickets,” Bowman says. “Fans can use the tickets, forward them to a friend, resell them, or even donate them to charity – and they never get lost or left at home"

Interesting.

Passbook stinks for me so far. The Starbucks by my work doesn't pop up until I am walking out of the store. I stood their for 5 mins waiting just for it to "Work" and finally gave up.

The Starbucks by my house the "Pin" is at least .5 a mile off of the actual location. They have it in the middle of a cornfield on an extension of a street that hasn't even been built yet. . I have submitted "updates" multiple times from both my phone and my wifes and they aren't updating it.

Hey everyone, check out the Valpak app for coupons for local businesses. You can add these coupons directly to Passbook.

For example, my local BK has a buy 1 Whopper, get one free with coupon :)

For some of those MLB and concert tickets, it would be nice to be able to collect them. Anyone want to write an app for that?
