So I would like to know, whats the point of having a Kroger Card or other rewards/loyalty card in passbook if they can't even be scanned?

Neither the self checkout, nor the handheld wand nor the regular checkout could scan my kroger card from my phone screen... am I missing something?

I have found that the scanners at a number of retailers can not read barcode off the iPhone's glass screen. This does not only affect Passbook. Let's hope that Passbook will provide the needed push for these retailers to update their scanning systems.

Um, since when does the Kroger app support Passbook? It was last updated Sept. 6. If you're getting it off one of those make-your-own passbook passes, I don't think they work correctly. I've not read many good reports.

Besides, I have an app called Key Ring for my store loyalty cards. They scan off the iPhone's screen just fine, as does the barcode for the Starbucks app.

has same issues with my old droid x2. only one that works is the company app for starbucks - maybe only specific scanners?

I'll check Key ring out thanks.

First, I was looking around to make sure I'm not the only one who thought Kroger's plan to put their cars in Passbook was stupid.

After looking at the thread here, allow me to shed light on the ones that do scan:
There are two types of scanners: 1D (simple barcodes like UPCs, etc) scanners that I call reflective because they use a laser to detect the changes in the color on the paper, plastic, etc.; and imaging scanners that sample a picture like with the iPhone's camera (these can scan 1D and 2D barcodes like QR codes, shipping labels, etc.).

The reason Kroger (some Target, Walmart, etc) scanners cannot read the barcode on the phone is because it cannot reflectively read the barcode; while Starbucks scanners can because it's taking a picture of the screen and can read the barcode from that.

i have noticed at starbucks if my screen brightness is very low it cannot read the barcode. try to increase the brightness all the way before scanning it and see if that works.

This is why the LA Fitness app automatically increases the phones brightness to enable scanning.

Check your display brightness. I use Stocard at Kroger and it works every time. It automatically adjusts to full brightness before hand, however.

I have to agree with the original poster - I've used Passbook with all sorts of things and most have PDF417 or QR codes (Starbucks, Dunkin', American Eagle, Target's Cartwheel, homemade Qdoba card, and various tickets). I got excited when Kroger had the option to add to Passbook, but I never could get it to read either. I wonder if there are any other in the style of the Kroger one that work? (Code 39?)

My passbook card works at my local Kroger stores. The caveat is that it has to be the handheld scanner at a manned register. (The self-checks can't read them correctly.)
