Is this normal behavior to require passcode every morning? I charge it every night. And it seems like every morning I need to use passcode before FaceID works. After that I only need to input the passcode if it meets the listed criteria like Rebooting the phone. That's what I could find with Google search. I did find one thread saying it does this if FaceID wasn't used for 4-5 hrs? Is that correct? Or is something else going on? I feel like this started happening only recently. Or maybe because I had a simpler passcode before and I recently changed it to alphanumeric. Which kinda makes it a pita to do every morning.

I've had this happen sometimes, I think starting with 16.2, but not every morning. It happened to me yesterday morning but this morning was fine. For me, it seems to happen after I update iOS and then stops after a day or two. I believe it's caused by the iPhone flushing memory at night when on the charger and it's like it's soft-rebooting.

If you check in Analytics Data, you should see SystemMemoryReset logs for each day you have to enter your passcode in the morning. Not much you can do about it and hopefully they fix it.

Yes this is intended behavior as implemented by Apple. https://www.apple.com/business-docs/FaceID_Security_Guide.pdf

If you haven’t used FaceID in 4 hours a passcode is required. It’s way too short an interval since most people sleep more than 4 hours. It seems to only trigger intermittently for me though. Usually around the 8 hour mark
No you‘re reading that wrong. It says that it‘s required if you haven‘t used your passcode within the last 7 days (so 7 days without entering your passcode starts the following timer) and you haven‘t used FaceID within 4 hours of that threshold (7 days of no passcode usage).

Having to enter passcode every morning can be a sign of many things like your phone respringing over night (crashing), FaceID being triggered incorrectly (display turns on and it detects something as a face) or another person looking at your display while you sleep.

This may sound stupid, but, do you charge it at night on a stand facing you? It may be locking out faceid because it is trying to unsuccessfully unlock many times as it detects your face while you sleep.

Or the old chestnut of “you’re holding it wrong”? Grabbing and squeezing the phone such that pressing power and volume up buttons at same time to temporarily disabling biometrics?

I have to enter my passcode maybe once a week when I take it off the charger in the morning. There is an interval for the requirement on all my devices, even my Mac which I normally unlock with my watch, but, as mentioned above, is normal and just not that often.
