this really stinks also. I just bought this all over the hype about 1password. I find It does not work as easy as it's reported. Then when I find I need a Mac Version and that says $49.99. my mouth drops open. LIke. WTF? you mean I have to buy more and then I find there are better password keepers for free?

Someone said why do we need a keeper? supppose I go to someones house, want to get on the internet into one of my forums, even this one, I need to have a place that keeps the passwords with me.

i go to the apple store and they want you apple I.d. and your what ever other cloud id to help you. If can't remember it how the heck can you get help?

i just logged out of my youtube account to see if I could set up password keeper. Well guess, what, I don't remember that password and now I'm sol to try to figure out what I used back when...

I'm ticked off now and out of $17.99 for nothing!!!!! articles should give all the details about how you have to pay for this here and there before just raving about how good it is.

While I understand that 1Password is not cheap, it is quality software, supported by a business that does give great support. This particular thread was in the Mac Applications forum, rather than the iOS forum and was therefore primarily aimed at OS X Apps, rather than the iOS App. Some of the limitations of the iOS App are mainly due to the sandboxing requirements of Apple than the App itself, although there is a built in web browser in the 1Password iOS App.

Clearly everyone's milage may vary, and I am sorry that 1Password does not work for you. However my view is if I am going to put all my passwords in one place I would want to make sure that I used quality software from a company that had a good track record and a business model that meant that they will be there tomorrow. Those companies that offer free or cheaper alternates may or may not be around in the future.

didnt have the time to read all the comments. i am using 1password. bought it at 50% discount. must have and very useful. also has 1password on my iphone. the best password manager for me.

I just use the Built in Password manager, why the hell do people want 1Password, I tried to "get" (Understand) the App, still don't get it.
Not only that, try importing from Safari, there is a dropdown Menu to import from Safari, but, it won't help much, they point you to a site, you have to download scripts to get a CVS file as output, first step you get a txt file and then it needs another step which converts it, but, my output was done in a fraction of a second and YES empty.
I have hundreds of passwords, now do you really think I am all manually going to add, no way.
It doesn't stop there, it isn't too well integrated in safari.

I'll keep Safari's Keychain "Manager", can't be much better.

If it works for you then great.

The key advantages of 1Password are;

1. Better security - if you are logged in your Mac then anyone can access your logins, while you are away from your computer. You can get round this by logging out or setting a screen saver password, but 1Password is simpler.

2. Portability - with 1Password you can sync your passwords to other devices and operating systems. With the built in password manager you are pretty much stuck with Safari on your Mac.

3. 1Password does so much more than store your passwords, it has a built in identity manager, credit card manager, as well as software licence key database and a secure notes database.

Actually good point. How does this work if u r on another computer (friend, work, etc)?

Either you can buy the app for your smartphone and look up the password, or if you get the Mac App you can put the database on a USB Key or Dropbox and using any web browser you can login to this secure database via any browser. This functionality is called 1Password Anywhere.

Agilebits the developers have thought through just about every scenario and have a solution.

Fair enough.

I don't do much browsing on my iPhone, don't have a data package for it and right now I don't need a password Manager for this.

If I am away I always close the Lid

Don't have many Credit Cards, just one and a Debit Card, I surely can remember those two passwords.

it's clear Justperry, you may not think you need software such as 1password but I think we all should take measures to protect our selves for that one possible time someone goes to the bathroom or you have to go the neighbor or just any where away from your computer.

you want to sign in to networks when on vaction. We are tied to the internet in a lot of ways. Right now, it's not a concern but I'd like to learn this.

I wish there were visual tuturials on getting started step by step. I even looked for a book but can't find one.

one thing about Mac software, you can go into the store and they help you. I wish they would come out with a product because there would be someone there to teach you. I don't understand the fact they tie things in with another software so you have to learn how to do that also.

Trying to learn one software is bad enough then to have to have another one for the product to work efficiently.

James Craner - set up a visual turoial and then maybe they'd get more customers. Or they really don't care that if you can't read and do then it ain't for you.

Lastpass, I have it working at least. Can't say that for 1password.

I did do a screencast tutorial of sorts, that shows some of the 1Password password manager features - it is on my blog, but I need to redo it, as it was one of the first tutorials I did and it's a little ropey in places. I am going to wait until Agilebits release version 4 of the Mac App and I will put something up. Not much point covering V3 at the moment.

Well, looks like you are happy with Lastpass, which is a popular alternative and gets the job done. At least you are using a decent password manager.

Yes, thank you. but I would like to learn the 1password if possible When do you think the new software is coming out?

When it does come out will it just update what people have now?
How are they connected to dropbox? is it the same company?
I did see one of your tuturials and I"m reading your page 1password review now.

If I should try 1password again, I would have to uninstall lastpass wouldn't I?
Then if you uninstall that, how do you get your passwords to put into the new password keeper/wallet.

do you believe Moxiewallet to be unsafe or say not as secure as lastpass and 1password?

I have no connection with 1Password or Agilebits the developer, I just use and like the software, so I don't have the inside track of when V4 will be released.

Agilebits have no connection with Dropbox they are separate companies.

I can't comment on Moxier Wallet as I have never used it. I am aware of at least one person on the forums that is using it and likes it. My only concern is they are using the fremium business model, which is reliant on the users upgrading to the premium version, before the developer gets paid. Maybe this will work for them, it has been successful for Dropbox, but there are quite a few password managers out there, and Agilebits has been around for a while and won a significant number of awards. I personally would not want to invest in a solution that does not have the track record of 1Password. Your milage may vary.

As for changing password managers, I have never done it. So don't know how easy that would be. 1Password can detect when you manually enter a password for a website that is not in it's database and prompt you to save it in the 1Password database. I am not sure if it can detect a password being auto entered via another password manager so you may have to manually create the entry. This perhaps another reason that you should use a password manager that is likely to stay the course.

To be honest if you like Lastpass I would stick with that, many people like and recommend it. I think the important point here is you are using a decent password manager which is the goal at the end of the day.

If you want more video tutorials, I highly recommend screencastsonline. A subscription is very inexpensive and you will learn loads. Don has covered 1Password in depth, both the new iOS App and the existing Mac App.

James - Thank you!!! I love to learn and always going to apple is not feasible. This will show me what I don't know and I have something to learn about. Great. Thanks for the link. Now this may very well be worth subscribing to. Great platform. Love the clarity an it's VIDEOS!!!!!

And thank you for saying Lastpass is also a good choice to go with. On some forums though, I think I'm just going to let the keychain handle that.

I understand your gripes here about Software learning curves, for me it's fairly easy but I guess it;s difficult for many.

------

I am lucky that both my Debit Bank Card and my Credit card have safe online sites.
My bank account does not use passwords, I have to use a random reader to get access to the site and then again when I pay/transfer, ALL banks should use this system instead of just User Name and a password, it is much safer.
For a potential thief, they need 3 items to get access, a Random Reader issued by my bank, my Debit Card and my Password.

My credit account does not have online transactions to other accounts than the ones I own myself, so even when someone breaks into it they can not transfer money to their/another account.

For the 2 or so other "important" sites where money is involved like PayPal I type them manually and they are difficult.

If anyone breaks into the other sites I use there is no important data lost.

You can already do a lot yourself to make it safer.

updates for 1password

Maybe i should start another thread, but.........
For all you long time 1password users, how proactive are agilebits when there are OSX updates, i.e. from 10.6 to 10.7, 10.8 etc?
I saw one comment on the AppStore that it wasn't Mountain Lion compatible, this appears to incorrect now.
So this is my concern, if you put all your trust in 1password, then how long must you wait until they support any new OSX version? Otherwise I feel I would be stuck waiting for the catch up.

Agilebits are very proactive when it comes to updates. I am not sure what comment was on the App store, but 1Password was Mountain Lion compatible on the day of release. I have been using 1Password for over two years now and have never had a problem accessing my passwords.

I have moutain lion ox and I just downloaded the trial of 1password. I know this may not be the answer to your question but just wanted to let you know I think it works with this software. I've been trying to work it for 2 days now. What the problem is this is my first time using one of these type of softwares.

I did download also lastpass and what i found is lastpass is a bit *bulk* in that it adds another toolbar to what you already have. So that's 5 of those lines up top.

When I'm using 1password, there is no tool bar and I like the difference so far. One thing like that can also make a difference.

My problem is trying to get 1password to work with my ipad and make sure it's working wright on my computer. If you go with it, write down your old passwords until you have it running to your understanding.

I'm using current version of LastPass on a MacBook Air with Safari and Dell PC with Firefox and in neither case does it add another toolbar or change the size of a toolbar. There may be an option that I'm not aware of to do that. In Safari on my Air it places a small icon between the Next Page and Share icons.

Wow. Then there must be something wrong with what I got. I'll delegate and re-download because I sure do know a toolbar when I see one. I also have the latest Firefox software.

I'll try again. But the more I play around with lastpass, I like it.

It did leave a little icon in the top toolbar that looks like those things that go on medical alert bracelets and there was also that next toolbar. Maybe that can be deleted

On FireFox on my Dell PC the LastPass icon is just to the left of the Home button and not on a separate toolbar. If you are using Firefox on a Mac it could be different. On the PC Firefox there is an option for which toolbars are displayed and I believe that one of those is for a separate LastPass toolbar.

Lastpass does not add a toolbar in firefox or Chrome if you use the add-on feature in firefox, or extension feature in chrome. Adds a small icon in the existing address/search bar on both Macs and PC's

okay. i just looked and now it does. I'm on my macbook pro on my firefox browser

on the Safari browser I downloaded the lastpass.

there is a toolbar now that says
My last pass vault
Sites
Open Favorites
Fill forms
Tools
Go premium and more. Yes, this is a whole tool bar.

on my 1password, there is not another tool bar or anything. the 1password *key* is the last icon on my regular toolbar next to the google search thingy.

Here's a picture of Firefox and chrome address bars. Notice the Lastpass icon on the right? I've never had a dedicated Lastpass toolbar. To me that would be unacceptable

Chrome and Firefox with Lastpass installed without dedicated toolbars
