Password-protected notes in earlier iOS and Mac OS X versions?

I know that password-protected notes are exclusive to iOS 9.3 and later and Mac OS X 10.11.4 El Capitan and later, but what will happen if I open a password-protected note in:

• iOS 9.2.1 and earlier

AND

• Mac OS X 10.11.3 El Capitan and earlier?

Might be something like "your notes is damaged", or "cannot read contents" blah blah. My pure guess.

The password-protected notes don't sync over if you have an earlier version. You won't even see them in the list.
