iPod Pause between songs

This is one of those things I've wanted to ask about for a while.

Why MUST the iPod pause between songs? Its only like 1/10 of a second long, but its noticeable when listening to... say Dark Side of the Moon or a newer Tool album.

it's something that people have complained about for a loooooooooong time now in itunes and the ipod... google "gapless playback itunes" and there will be many hits of complaints.
