Pay as you go data packages in US

Hi,

I'm coming to the US on Sunday and planning on picking up a wifi only iPad as i have one of these for using at home in the UK

with the above i can get wifi access from a mobile pay as you go sim.

Is there anything similar in the US that's not tied to a contract?

I'm going to be spending 3 weeks in the US back in the UK a week and then going over again for about a week so don't mind paying a little up front just have no use for a contract and don't need a 3G iPad as i have my iphone and the device above.
