IME, from my years in the classroom at a Big 10 school, particularly elective classes with athletes, the athletes were NEVER there, and had ridiculously long extensions on assignments. From everything I've experienced, many/most athletes just blow off academics almost entirely so I don't think they are too stressed about that.
I sure wish I had had those same benefits when I was doing dual degrees in chemical engineering and chemistry, working 20 hours a week as a chemistry lab T/A, and 20 hours a week at an on campus demographic office. I still made my deadlines, and did excellent work. Many times that meant being in the chemical engineering lounge pulling Friday and Saturday all nighters, but I did what I had to do to meet my deadlines and graduate.
They should be held to the same standards as everyone else IMO. No free lunch so they can kick a ball for a few hours a day. They should lose their scholarships if the academics aren't up to par.
